I've heard tell that they make this device, called a shovel that has been proven to greatly reduce incidents of pin cushioning.
On the plus side, you got to give them credit for being consistent.
I think if you add another 2 of them, that you could start an atomic pile, and it could grow....
Reminds me of the new hand that set me a hub in the middle of a hedge without clearing the ground cover and was left with an impossible setup on a 60d nail floating on a pile of leaves and branches. Do over time.
First clean off a spot the size of a plate and to the depth of the sod to get to dirt and then get line to set whatever.
The last pin cushion I found was the same surveyor's monument on opposite sides of a crosstie fence corner. That problem has been a regular event around here, simply did not look for an existing monument.
If I were retracing I would call the one corner monument out as 2 capped two bit rebar. Take your pick on which one you measure to or split the diff.
It's easier to pound in two half inch bars than it is an inch bar?

I hate finding a pin cushion. I really hate it when it is the same cap on both pins.
When I find those I take to time to email the picture to the surveyor. Most of time it is the result of sub-par field hands. Give us all the opportunity to weed out the button pusher "crew chiefs"..
There is alot to be said for call on a plat that reads "fnd 3/8 IP .03 south and .02 west of sw corner" i never could under stand the petty arrogance of some to set a new corner so close......
I've seen it happen due to snow and/or ice, but it is still inexcusable!

We takem to lunch and give them the photo. Worth every penny
Need a 3" pipe and cap to go over both with no punch mark.
Almost looks like they had to shave off the top cap to get the lower one in.

This particular surveyor is awful and notorious for this exact thing as well as missing key points. And I'd be willing to bet that he was on the second job....

I thought that I blacked out enough that no one could tell who the caps belonged to.
