Error : unsuitable condition under strong sunlight (shots were in open under cloudy skies)

I'm not an expert with this type of instrument. However that "error code" is very common.
Just a couple of quick questions, were you shooting around/through trees?
How old is your battery? Is there any corrosion on it?
Another idea is the instrument is in reflector-less mode shooting at a prism.
