So boss goes out to do some recon and to locate survey monuments he set many years back. He's finding them but instead of his survey cap some other surveyor thinks his are better. The kicker is instead of removing his cap, he cuts his plastic caps and nails the tops on top of boss's cap. WTH? That is just stupid.

Must be from one of THOSE STATES that encourage such desecration.
I have caught that happening too.
If the choice is between pulling the iron and switching caps I'll take a new cap every time. That's child's play compared to some things I see.

What point of law would bring about a choice to put your cap on a found rod or pipe, etc?
report them to the Board.
Tacked a plastic cap ontop of an existing plastic cap? Maybe the old plastic cap wasn't legible anymore;)
I am with MightyMoe, maybe that is why they did it. However, still not a reason to do so. If you find it and it checks, hold it and go on.
I saw a rebar with cap driven inside of a 2 inch diameter pipe last week. All of the deeds that I read called for the pipe, yet this surveyor drove a rebar pin with cap inside of it. That makes no sense to me either. At least it wasn't a pin cushion.

That was to tighten it's position for those millimeter surveyors out there that think their black box is giving them a more precise answer. Tongue in cheek firmly.

There are places that require that all monuments be stenciled with the acceptors #. I suppose that is one way of doing it. Sure is a new one.

No idea. I am all ears if you have one. Steve

I did something similar once but that was because the pipe had just about rusted away to nothing and I wanted to perpetuate the monument.

Bingo. This is no different than these idiots that think they need to flag/paint everything they see, no matter how much old flagging/paint is on it already.
