Used my new robotic for the first time today. Topcon DS 205 with a Tesla DC and magnet software. Very impressed! Really user friendly. Even works well in the thick areas. Does a very good job of tracking. Was a little hesitant of the magnet software as I've been a Carlson user for years. I like how it works. Did not take long to get used to. Does above and beyond what I need.

Tom

Did that package you bought come with the RC5
on the pole ?

And do you need it to reacquire
lock on the prism ?

No rc5 used on this one. Different design than the power station. The total station tracks the prism. Very simple and easy. A lot cheaper than the PS because you don't have to buy the extra $5000 robotic kit

DS doesn't use the RC5 or at least mine doesn't, i'm told the DS locks onto the 'profile' of the prism and so can discount other reflective items such as vests etc

That's good that the DS doesn't need the RC5.

I just can't see dragging the RC5 thru the woods
at that price. I can see damaging that pretty quick.

I think the worst place to reacquire lock on a prism
is facing a lake with the sun glistening off the waves.

Too many fake prisms !

I did not have a problem with it finding thevprism or locking onto something else. I even stood in the same direction as my back sight prism (in between it and the total station) and it locked to me every time. As far as a reflective vest I can't say as I never wear one.

I work construction so have had mine take a second look at my vest or an excavator before now.

For me loosing track is usually because I've stood in between the TS and Prism or something driven inbetween. I'll just press stop and then re adjust the instrument so as its pointing at me and the guide light changes from red to green or vice versa.

I found the same thing. Usually very easy to stop, re aim with the guide lights and press track. Finds it pretty easy. Once I get fluid with it, I can see this being a very helpful tool.
