Has anyone used the Sub-surface ML-3s locator? My old Schonstedt bit the dust and was looking for a new locator. Saw the ml-3 on their website and was wondering how they performed.

Never tried that one, but I've been using this one for some time and highly recommend it:

http://chrisnik.com/hounddog_locator.html

Contrary to the ad, these are not new, they used to be marketed under the Magnawand name. I got mine at least 10 years ago. Still works great and the ability to distinguish the vertical magnetic flux is very beneficial to finding iron monuments.

I think Hayes Instrument sells them somewhat cheaper than through Chrisnik.

I have the older Subsurface and it works great. Based on the old unit, this new version should work well.

I met one of the principals at a conference a few years back; they are part of the former Schoenstadt team that left when the company was in a turmoil.

I'll second clearcut's recommendation. I will say that based on my experience with other surveyors that you'll either love it or hate it.

I believe if you sent the Schondstet in they will refurbish it, may want to look at that as well.

I am borrowing a Houndog till I get something else and I agree with the love/hate thing. I'm not real crazy about it so far. May have to grow on me some.

I sent it to schonstedt and it could not be repaired - the board was no longer available. First sent it back in '05 then again in '08 and now in '11. Sub-surface has a trade in like schonstedt does. Will trade in on something.

I have an ML-3. Outstanding piece of hardware. Love it. Hard to break even if you are trying.

A few years back I had the pleasure of meeting the then CEO of the Company. I understand he has since retired and the company was sold. While Ron was there, Subsurface was as good a company as there was to work with you.

Jimmy - Subsurface also does repair on Schonstedt locators and in many cases had more repair parts than the mother company did. If you are interested in having your Schonstedt fixed, I would call them. If you have the money, I would trade it in on a new Subsurface or better yet, get it fixed and buy a new Subsurface also.

I've heard that

Schoenstedts are like radios in that you send one in and the factory will send you a refurbished one for $150. That sounds like a deal to me.
