A critical mass of employees have requested that we invest in a robotic instrument. I am looking for recommendations. The work is construction staking and design surveys. Any help would be appreciated.
Trimble S6 with the vision option - best thing since sliced bread
We are going Trimble SX10. Currently use a 1 second S7 and love it.
Have been using this Trimble robot with a TSC2 for two years laying out grid lines, roads, utilities. Its accuracy is tighter than the contractor can build to, we've not had any complaints. The radio disconnects around 1100- 1200 feet.
I've been using the Topcon GT for a while now. I love it. Carlson is actively writing drivers for it. It's small and fast. Has great lock. Using it in hybrid mode is sweet.

I don't think you can make an informed decision until you have the answers to some questions:
1. What's my budget? If you need brand-new top-of-the-line but can only afford second-tier used, you've got a problem.
2. Do you have a brand preference? Whether in consideration of local service and support, compatibility with existing equipment, or personal prejudice, this can narrow your range of choices.
3. How much accuracy do you need? Don't buy a construction-grade gun if you need to do geodetic control work.
4. How much time and money are you willing to invest in training? If you're a hands-on tinkerer you can do a lot with a little, but if you need something that has to be productive among multiple employees on Day One, you're probably going to want a setup that's as close to what they're already using as possible.
You can't go wrong with a Trimble robot, and they have price / performance points to match almost anyone's needs. You have a knowledgeable dealer out there; get a comprehensive demonstration and break down which instrument and options best suits your situation. I've tested the SX10 on a couple of sites; it's an amazing machine but it also might be overkill for most people. It's hard to beat an S5 or S7.

Have you ordered an SX10? Have they given you a time frame for delivery? I've heard that they're still running six or eight weeks.
This is for the City of Denver. The budget is whatever we can justify. Most of our work is topo and construction in existing City Streets. We currently use TSC3 data collectors so Trimble would probably be the logical choice of robot. I think an S5 would suffice but would move up if there are clear advantages in doing so.

We are getting in on an existing order if it works out. Yupp they are slow rolling.. I could put two if them to work today if i had them..
S6 here together with the R10, TSC 3 running Access. Be tough to go back to anything else.
I don't even know how people can work without a robot anymore....
Warning.... If you bill hourly and don't raise your rate you'll be looking for a 2nd job [emoji23]

I've been running a Topcon DS Series 5 second robot with a Tesla collector. I cringed at the thought of spending $25,000 but now I don't know what I would do without it. And as stated above, adjust your hourly rate as you will be going through a job much faster. Work smarter, not harder.
I heard there was a robot available that looked like Scarlett Johansson. Not sure Charlie Trimble can top that.

Except Leica and Carlson no longer play nice together.
A lot will depend on budget. The Leica TS16i and CS20 are an unbeatable combination. Extremely powerful EDM and the new Leica Captivate operating system is very user friendly. If you are willing to spend a little more, get the MS60. Hands down the most powerful and versatile robot on the market.

They do work well together still. Just can't use the imaging features
I have Leica ts12 and Carlson2 DC works great.
Yesterday I demoed Geomax Zoom90 aka Carlson CR with SurvPC ( WOW ) and the price was quite a bit lower than the ts12
TRIMBLE, and don't look back.

e. Works like they advertise it will work
f. Smooth

You owe it to yourself to get a demo if you haven't seen one work. Even the original S6 is GREAT.
