I'm thinking May 1st will be the end locally. Not that this area has been on strict lockdown, but businesses are forced closed and schools are only doing the zoom classroom. SWMBO is busier than ever trying to do her classes that way, depends on the class if it adds or subtracts the workload.
One local business decided he had enough and opened last week. It will be interesting to see what happens with that, I suspect nothing will be done and others will begin to open.
It hasn't effected me much, but there was a pullback of three jobs from a utility client. Their revenue plummeted with the shutdown and they are not doing any new construction planning this entire year......bummer.
I went to do a boundary, a 200 mile one way drive, on Thursday, seems traffic had exploded from two weeks before when I travelled. We have had only two C19 related deaths, as I hear it they were both very elderly, with other issues.
When I returned home for lunch I discovered a simple business card stuck in my door frame.?ÿ I did not recognize the name.?ÿ I would almost bet this is a fellow whose job is temporarily gone due to the lockdown.?ÿ Jack of all trades from roof work to minor repairs, plumbing, electrical, portable welding and scrap iron hauling/sales.?ÿ No problem with codes or unions or any of that as we are in the boondocks.?ÿ I'm keeping the card, just in case.
ASSUMING that current trends continue??? I suspect that things will start to open up a bit in May here in Southwest Wyoming, but I'm not going to hold my breath. I will need to venture forth again tomorrow (7 days since last time out), and perform a few of the usual chores (mail bills, get a few supplies from the grocery store), and I'm a little curious as to the general "feel" about town. The last month or so has been pretty sleepy looking downtown.
Loyal?ÿ
" I suspect that things will start to open up a bit in May"
Same here. The regular idiots are raising hell about everything associated with this and would love it if the quarantine was lifted today. But it won't be. Being a worthless retiree I'm gonna stay put until wave 2 is over.
I have to venture out Tuesday for some vittles. I can only go on Tuesdays or Wednesdays from 7:00am to 9:00am and that's because my local Publix opens those 2 day's for us ol' farts. I've almost always done the grocery shopping because I don't consider a trip to the store as an "fun outing" for the day, or a place to catch up on your reading of labels of stuff you've consumed for years without question. SWMBO said, "fine, YOU do it from now on".
Since I have been shopping for the past 20 or so years I know the store inside out and can git 2 complete weeks worth of vittles in 32 minutes.
????
For now its May 15th in NY but the back room thinking is June 1st
One of the big losses here was the spring furniture market in High Point. "The Market" is a twice- annual affair. I paid my college tuition working in furniture factories and getting samples to High Point for the fall market was a big part of summer work. I was a truck hand, not allowed to touch those prized pieces after they were unloaded.
The wikipedia article makes the reason for its closing pretty clear:?ÿ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Point_Market
The losses are huge and mounting. I hope we can get things open soon.
All sorts of things are being canceled now that have been held consecutively for decades, if not more than a century.?ÿ Guess what.?ÿ The world will keep on turning.?ÿ We will make adjustments and move on.?ÿ It sucks to be directly involved with one of those major events, though, because it's part of our inner pride to keep the tradition going.?ÿ We have a local event that has been held every year since 1873, even in 1918 and through the major wars.?ÿ This may be the year it isn't.?ÿ Depends on what is possible in mid-July.
This was the first year with no high school prom since they held the first one.?ÿ All the young Spring sports specialists, such as pole vaulters, are at a disadvantage from selling themselves to colleges for scholarships as they were ready to provide the best results ever.?ÿ The standard graduation events will not occur with all the hugging and kissing and hand shaking and other direct one on one contact, if anything is even held.?ÿ Funerals are extra sad for all involved.?ÿ Weddings are being postponed.?ÿ I read yesterday that there are now only 10 places in the entire State instead of 105 where a couple can file to get a wedding license.?ÿ Our court system is basically on hold.
Yeah things are slow here and getting slower. No new work is starting up and construction jobs are stopping all over the place do to PPE shortage. Kinda wish I lived up in NW Montana or North Idaho right about now. So many people here are freaking out and paranoid. In my county we have a population of 260,000 with 287 cases and everything but groceries and restaurants (curb side only is closed).?ÿ

Gained two boundary survey jobs before breakfast (now) today. As long as people have divorces or a rich great-uncle to give you land to build your new house there will be work for the boundary surveyors.
The one caused by the divorce will be entertaining. I think every survey I have ever done that was brought on by a divorce has had some sort of extra memory attached to it. One time the ex-wife thought she could seduce me into a free survey. No thanks. I mean she was pretty and put together very nicely and I was single but NO. I CAN'T PAY MY BILLS WITH YOUR .....

We just had our first confirmed case with the spouse of someone who works in my building. The chit is beginning to hit a bit close to home. Appears to be two distinct camps around here. One group appears to be in complete denial and make no attempt at social distancing, wearing masks, or staying home, the fatalists, and the other group is in lockdown and keeping up with all the recommendations. I have to assume the two groups overlap, to the detriment of both.?ÿ?ÿ
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
This evening, in my role as a member of our local school board, I will be participating in a Zoom meeting.?ÿ There is only one item on the agenda of the special meeting.?ÿ Certain people are requesting that we call off school for those who don't want to participate.?ÿ Let those who want to keep learning do so, but let the underachievers of the world take whatever they had six weeks ago as a final grade and give them credit as if they had been present throughout the entire term.?ÿ I am sure there will be some pleading going on and not just by students and parents.
Some things never change.?ÿ Geez.
@holy-cow SHMBO in-person school is closed the rest of the year. They are continuing with eLearning the rest of the year. However, grades cannot count against them. What they had on March 13 still stands - but their grades can improve. Thank God school will end May 20th and this all happened at the tail end of the year.

@williwaw I think the right answer in somewhere in between. Wear mask indoors/close quarters and practice SD. But the entire shut down and exclusive selection of what can and cannot be open is nonsense. Slow the spread yes, but life must go one. 20 million with no pay will cause damage beyond our wildest imagination. If I can buy groceries then why can't restaurants open at half capacity with 10 feet between tables? Outdoor seating? How is shopping at Lowe's different than Hobby Lobby?

Sweden is taking a completely different approach, shooting for herd immunity. Only time will tell if their approach was the right one. The US is very diverse and what works in one part of the country might be a disaster in another. The elephant in the room is consumer confidence. You can open all the businesses you like but if people are staying home and seeing paychecks evaporate around them, they will not spend. 70% of the economy is based on consumer spending. Widespread testing is the only viable solution I can see to getting back to a semblance of normal. Not knowing if the person next to you in the super market is asymptomatic doesn't do anything for people's confidence. Why is Korea and Singapore so far ahead on this? Testing, testing, testing. Until that happens, we are and will remain behind the curve.
Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
The challenge is to get the little darlings to do ANYTHING. There is no problem with the elementary and the middle school is doing OK but the high school is a different story. We have some high schoolers who will not be contacted and their parents/guardians are also dodging everything sent their way. They want to pretend the school year ended in March but it most assuredly did not. Some will not graduate due to this foolishness and some will be retaking classes next year because they were failing in March. AND, IT WILL NOT BE THEIR FAULT!
@williwaw Perhaps, but a test on Monday doesn't mean your safe on Tuesday, Wednesday, etc. While testing symptomatic patients is important and can control the spread, I don't think that it alone is the gatekeeper. I would think the Anti-body test is the key. I would not be surprised at all if the virus is way more widespread than thought. I've been tabulating my county numbers against testing totals. They have been holding steady at 21-23% that get tested (have to have serious symptoms) are positive no matter how many test - hope that continues and starts to retreat. Today is day 13 in IL since the Statewide lock down, with a 14 day burn rate for the infection the numbers should begin to fall in the coming days.
One thing for sure, the study of epidemiology is a fascinating science that I didn't know anything about 30 days ago.

There may be homes that don't have a computer and internet able to support remote classes, but I'll bet those are rare. I'll bet even those have a cell phone that would let them listen and could borrow books or get paper copies of essential material.
If there is any way, they should be held accountable for trying to continue learning. If they don't try, they should practice saying, "Would you like fries with that?"
SWMBO students have really stepped up. Out of all her students there are only two that haven't. Being the way she is, she is tracking them down and probably will get them to finish even if it's down to the wire.
