Haven't accidentally run ours without the antenna yet, but we were aptly warned by our dealer about the ramifications of such...

Have you actually damaged one due to this?

no...haven't run one without. The guy I work for on and off in Alaska is also Alaska's Topcon dealer and there is big emphasis on making sure that antenna is attached prior to power up.

I damaged the radio on one of our Trimble 5603's by using a damaged antenna on it. IF the radio can't transmit it will fry components. Cost over $1000 to fix. Now I replace the $20 antenna at the first sign of wear.

Lincoln County, BTW ,is the home of Dykes v. Arnold.
