Anybody have any recommendations on a good gas powered Jack Hammer? My digging bar just doesn't fit my hands like it use to. I'd mainly use it to dig up monuments in gravel roads with gumbo under the gravel. 12 inches deep usually.
I've found that I can dig a dozen 1in, 2in to 3in holes with a rock drill or auger to loosen the ground or asphault and dig it out.
I bought a used Wacker BHF30S in 1989.?ÿ Its still starts and runs perfect and has been in the shop exactly 1 time since I bought it.?ÿ Its a heavy bugger (about 65 pounds if I remember) but that adds to the impact... the machine does the work, you just hang on.?ÿ I use it mainly to bust through pavement and then loosen up the hard packed soil, gravel, clay.. whatever is below the pavement.?ÿ ?ÿI've dug many holes with it, some being 3' x 6' x 2-3' deep.?ÿ They do show up on ebay once in a while or maybe check with Wacker dealers for something thats been traded in.?ÿ ?ÿThere are other Wacker breakers that are newer and lighter.?ÿ I would trust Wacker brand.
I've had success using my Bosch 36v rotor-hammer for this purpose.?ÿ I have a couple of chisel tips for mine that do a good job in asphalt and gravel.?ÿ Much lighter and cleaner than a gas model.?ÿ Plus you can use it to drill in monuments and control.
I agree with John.?ÿ The Bosch 36v will power through a lot of asphalt, and drive 5/8" rebar when your elbow wears out.
Another voice for the 36v Bosch. Those batteries last a long time. A little light for busting up heavy concrete and asphalt but it will make quick work of gravel.
Dewalt is now making a line of 60v tools that includes a rotary hammer. I'd take a long look at that, too.
I would say electric as well I would look at the Milwaukee M18 SDS max with a 12Ah battery. I use the SDS plus for chiseling out frozen ground over property corners and putting hub in the ground in the winter when we have thick frost.
I use a generator and a hilti hammer drill with multiple attachments.

Same here, except a 30-lb Bosch demo hammer. (Okay, the only thing that's the same is the generator.)
I'm surprised to read all the endorsements of the Bosch 36V rotohammer for this purpose, as I've been very disappointed in the performance of mine when cutting through AC pavement.?ÿ The last time I tried I went through both batteries in the space of about 20 minutes, and only got through a few inches of pavement.?ÿ The demo hammer would have done that job in about 30 seconds.?ÿ The battery rotohammer does a great job drilling holes for small monuments in concrete, though.
Which demo hammer? Bosch makes a dozen of them.
