Occasionally I run into software that is inexpensive and very useful in land surveying and engineering. For example, Snagit or certain Excel or MS Word macros or lisp routines.

Have any of you any favorite small software that is inexpensive that you have found extremely useful in your work as a surveyor or engineer? If so, could you post it?

It's a javascript app that runs on the website, so you run it in a browser just like you would on a PC.

Ditto.

This text editor can switch to column mode. So you can move/delete/paste columns. Which comes in very handy when manipulating coordinate files.

Mr. Jim,

Don't know about Snagit, but we use the built-in combo to capture screen images. Been doing it for years.

what a nice program !! thank you for sharing
I noticed that a whole bunch of points can be pasted into that program.

For this one needs a SPACE delimited file with Pt N E El Desc fields, than copy them, than press Edit button beneath Point Srceen, and paste them there, and than press edit again.

Calc points can be retrieved in somewhat reverse order

I use it extensively to capture and create images for training. If you are dubious that that particular use is "surveying or engineering", there is a less often used but more direct use.

Several times I have used the "capture as text" function to get coordinates from a map into a coordinate file.

I capture the text then paste the text into a MSWord document. From there it is an easy process to get the text to an Excel Spreadsheet. That can be saved as a CSV or several other file types.

Some of the ones I use all the time in addition to survey specific software:

Avast! (internet security)

Convert for Windows (Convert is a free and easy to use unit conversion program that will convert the most popular units of distance, temperature, volume, time, speed, mass, power, density, pressure, energy and many others, including the ability to create custom conversions!)

CCleaner (disk cleaner)

FileZilla (ftp client)

ExpertGPS and/or Fugawi Global Navigator (similar, have owned Fugawi longer, BUT I use ExpertGPS more now)

Eye4Software Coordinate Calculator

IrfanView (image viewer)

Lotus SmartSuite (similar to MS Office, hasn't been updated since Y2K and yet still works, I think it to be much easier to use than MS office suite.) Write all of my reports using this product, word processor, spreadsheet (remember Lotus 123?) and the database, great product for making monument sheets.

Open Office (when I have to view and edit MS Office documents)

UltraEdit / UltraCompare / UltraSentry

Windows XP mode, use this quite a bit for things like CorpsCon, etc. that won't run in WIN7 64 bit.

WinZip

Not all of these are free, many are though and the paid versions are pretty inexpensive for all of them.
