Good idea for a thread. It has been done before, and should be done every occasionally again. Keeps everyone up-to-date of possible tools they haven't heard of before. Maybe include apps on the same thread.

This report just popped up from Avast!

I don't know that I have any infections, BUT it does make one wonder if it actually works!

Your avast! scanned 2,439,845 items in the last 30 days

384,276 files have been scanned
0 files were found infected and healed

2,054,433 web & network objects have been scanned
0 web & network objects were found infected and blocked

1,136 emails have been scanned
0 emails were found infected and healed

So out of 2.5M items, no issues, am I just lucky or is the big bad virus threat not as real as all the AV companies make you think?

Still not going without it, just wondering.

It would be useful to have a few 'sticky' threads for reference items.

Use this regularly as back up:

http://www.underhill.ca/Software/Copan/Windows/CopanWin.php

Some freebies here:

Some of the payware items also have fully functional free 30 uses versions.

> Windows XP mode, use this quite a bit for things like CorpsCon, etc. that won't run in WIN7 64 bit.

There's a note on the Army GeoSpatial Center site saying that Corpscon v6.0 runs on Win7 64-bit for many users once the do the following:

Windows 7:
Windows 7 users have had success by:
- Right click on the Corpscon.exe file
- Cick on "Troubleshoot Compatibility"
- Click on "Try Recommended Settings"
- Click in "Start the Program"

It worked for me.

Jim, hadn't seen that before, I don't think that note was there a couple years ago when I was trying to get CorpsCon to work with my then new PC. Probably leave it like it is, CorpsCon isn't the only "old" software I have running in the XP mode, there are a couple of others I use all the time too, I find the XP mode to be a good way to keep some of the old DOS utilities humming.

I am afraid WIN8 maybe too slick to include a way for "old" stuff to run, will want to wait a while before trying WIN8.

Been using UltraEdit since at least 2008, if not before. Has tricks you can't do in Excel or MS Word.

Please explain

The latest update to Ifranview has an excellent screencap tool, using a crossing window similar to Snagit.

I've used Snagit to three years, I guess, and love it, but for less frequent users, the Ifranview option is less expensive and offers as much or more editing options.

I use a free portable app called "Lightscreen" to do screen captures in XP.

I also use a program called "Beyond Compare" to keep project files on my local drive and the company network syncronized.
