You know like this:

LEGEND

* Indicates Found Monument as noted

versus:

LEGEND

* Found Monument as noted

I told a friend I didn't think "Indicates" is necessary. He said he uses indicates.

OO-Kay.

So I show him a map without "Indicates" and said, sarcastically, I need to go search for these monuments with dimensions south of where I find the giant word "LEGEND" out there, right?

He said, well yeah!

That's why , instead of "LEGEND" I always say "HOLLYWOOD" on my maps, so people know to look under the big sign.

I asked the obvious question, "You write *Bearing* a distance of *feet*"; why don't you put "a direction of" in front of the bearing?

Do we really think that Forrest Gump is going to be the main user of our maps? If so, why bother? Once you start dumbing stuff down, there may not be any level below which things won't go. I mean, why not an explanation of what a bearing such as N36°14'15"E means, for example?

I used "=" as well, but the co I'm at now uses "denotes".

I have a similar disagreement in my office. I agree with you, Dave. Business partner wants to use "Denotes ...". I go along to have peace, County Surveyor has me take it off.

Ooooo-kay!

Mark,
Doesn't that fall into the much derided "personal preference" category insofar as the County Surveyor's comments? Did it get changed per the comment? My former employer preferred 1":XX' over 1"=XX', and argued about the reviewer's personal preference when a City of Springfield Surveyor wanted it changed.

Sure it does. But you've got to pick your spots.

I would criticize someone for using 'accept' when they meant 'except'. I would also comment on a typo or if text was obscured by linework.

I would not criticize or even comment if they said 'indicates' nor if they left it off. You are getting upset because someone said it correctly? They used a complete sentence when they didn't have to? I'm glad they have a legend.

Wasn't the point that if every symbol listed in the legend must be explained as "indicating" or "denoting" something, then there is a whole lot of indicating or denoting going on. So it seems reasonable to ask whether the repetition of the word is really necessary for every symbol listed in the legend.

Of course it's not necessary; that doesn't make it incorrect.

Well, when we're discussing maps, probably "poor practice" is a better characterization. Poor practice is bad. Best practice is good. It's understood that a legend of symbols is one of equivalents, so the "indicates" or "denotes" is understood in that the symbol appears in the legend.

Personally I think maps should be readable even to Forrest Gump because they are also read by realtors. Seriously though, the maps are made for the clients; not other surveyors and not plan reviewers. It's an elitist attitude to produce a map readable only by a professional.

BTW Kent, I can NOT see how adding the word Indicates would constitute Dumbing Down a map.
