I have some hiperslites non-Glonass and looking to upgrade to newer units . With all this talk about LightSquared .I am getting spooked and thinking of holding holding off . Is this all hype or is it serious . I wish I knew the real answer. When will we know for sure what will happen .

The idea that the Light-Squared network will interfere with the L1 GPS signal and the operation of any precise positioning systems that require L1 (that would be all of the survey-grade GPS systems I'm aware of) is as serious as a heart attack. I was shopping for some new equipment, but won't buy a thing until it is known to actually function once the Light-Squared network is fully operational.

Does anyone know how fast Lightsquared plans to build this network? I saw somewhere that it won't be an issue for most users for several years, which allows time to evaluate what the effects really are.

This may be a naive approach (as in I'm not sure how many dealers would offer this or if it's even a good approach), but perhaps you could lease units with an option to buy?

I don't know how to link an old post but a month ago I posted a link that explained how in the next 4-9 years with the next generation of GPS all the current units will be obsolete and the replacement models should only cost around $1000.00.

Well, we know a couple of things, so far, I think. One, we know that they will probably need to use the L-band frequency that is probablematic for L1 carrier phase observations. We also know that they will be trying to add as many users as possible for the least infrastructure cost. That means urban areas, I think, because that is where the potential customers are concentrated. So, to me, that means rapid degradation of survey-grade positioning around urban areas first, but extending into the suburbs.
