Looking through a textbook re: trig levels. Do you remember when textbooks were this authoritative? Notes on trigonometric leveling:
"On certain hypotheses, substantiated on the whole by experience, the angle of refraction can be shown to be a constant fraction of the contained central angle theta, especially if the azimuths of lines of sight are much the same, zenith distances do not vary too greatly and atmospheric conditions do not change. .... Though none of the hypotheses in which theory is based is absolutely true, they are sufficiently near the truth for ordinary trigonometrical working. ..

The language I flowery. Which is due to the authors, of course.
Textbook by the Royal Engineers, 1925, on topographical surveying.
The book is marvelous. Not much has changed in the math, or procedure. Just the equipment we now use. It's a great go-to for the proper formulae, which is incorporated in software. (But sometimes software has errors.)
Don't forget to record the hgt of target and instrument, lest you be dismissed from your charge.
