Anyone else experienced marked decrease in the number of GPS satellites in view? We used to have 11-13 in sky, and our RTK units routinely tracked 8-10.
Last few weeks the number dropped to around 7, and we have problem even locking on to more than 4 or 5, which make RTK works a real pain..

We are using Leica SR530, very old units..

Anybody experienced the same? or perhaps can shed some light on this..

TIA

I noticed some issues last week. I talked with a friend yesterday and his crews are experiencing some issues as well.

I use Topcon Hiper Lites and he uses Trimble gear. Both of our systems are about 10-12 years old. I have no idea idea if that has anything to do with it.

I don't think you are alone.

11 to 13 sounds like GPS/Glonass. 7 or so sounds like GPS only.

The US GPS constellation is WAY into overtime. The orbits that they are in, allow this. Somebody on the other side of the world is experiencing 16+ sats, sometimes.

It is just the nature of the beast. IF more sats are placed into orbit, it always helps.

You can use this free online tool to see how many satellites are visible in your area at a given time.

Ashtech online missions planning

You can even go back in time, although the almanac may have changed somewhat depending on how far back you go.

GPS Status - Use Planning Tools

I shyed away from mission planning for a while right after getting a new GPS/GLONASS system. But if working in wooded areas, I still take a look at mission planning. I use the Spectra Precision site. Easy to use and seems to be accurate. That software said I should have about 16 birds in the sky around 1:00pm today. It was dead on with that number. Here's a shot of my DC screen at 1:00.

I've not noticed any problms lately but I'm only out when I know there are going to be lots of satellites available.

GPS Status - Use Planning Tools

Thank you for all the responses, it seem, the GPS satellites alone is no longer a viable option for RTK works due to the reduced satellites no.Perhaps it is time to ditch the 13 yr old SR530 GPS only with some newer toys that supports at least both GPS & glonass..

Anyone can suggest a good unit available out there in the used market with the lowest price tag?
TIA
