Do your maps use football fields as a unit of measurement? If not you are probably missing out on an important point. That is, football fields are almost exclusively the unit of choice by media outlets. Perhaps this is because it is the only unit of measurement the common man (or woman) understands and we, as a profession are missing this important fact.

Historic boundaries and conservation efforts.

I produced a series of maps of a rapidly eroding beach with two labeled dots:

* From here to there is 2,000 feet

* There

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far far way, I worked for an intimate little intelligence agency as a photo-analyst.?ÿ Olympic size pools were often used to verify our measurements.

Do your maps use US football fields as a unit of measurement? If not you are probably missing out on an important point. That is, US football fields are almost exclusively the unit of choice by US?ÿ media outlets. Perhaps this is because it is the only unit of measurement the common man (or woman) in the US understands and we, as a profession are missing this important fact.

As this is a world-wide forum, I fixed it for you.

Note that for the rest of the world football (which is actually played mostly with the feet and known as soccer to the US) allows a range of field sizes (measured in meters, which scare most people in the US).

That is why we did not use the fields as checks.

To be totally honest,?ÿ I will sometimes look at a distance from here (where I'm standing) to there (a tree, building, etc.) and think to myself, "Self, that is about the same length as a football field from end line to end line, so 300 feet."?ÿ Sometimes I will toss in a perpendicular distance to that, divide each side by 200, then multiply the resultants to get an estimated area in acres.?ÿ It's all estimation, but, it helps advise a client quickly as to whether or not their intended goal of a certain area is likely.

@mathteacher?ÿ

Not that I want one, but my idea of a McMansion should set on a minimum of 160 acres with adequate natural screening around the perimeter to make people who want to see it really work to do so..............or find a buddy with a drone that can evade my attempt to shoot it out of the air.

About ten miles or so from me in an adjoining county is a large tract of land purchased by some crazy hunter from near the Gulf of Mexico.?ÿ He brought in large bulldozers and moved enough dirt to construct what at first glance appears to be a river levee all the way around the perimeter of his land.?ÿ Solid barbed wire fences have also been constructed on the inside of the rectangular dam and motion-detecting cameras have been installed.?ÿ This guy is dead serious about not wanting anyone except close personal or business associates to know what is happening on his property.?ÿ Which makes you wonder.........................................

@holy-cow Thatƒ??s an estate, not a McMansion. A McMansion is 1/4 ac lot with the 3 story house built up to all 4 setbacks. Max sq area allowed on smallest allowed sized lot.?ÿ

I prefer not living so close to my neighbors that I can smell their farts shortly after hearing them.

In the sailing navy a cable was 1/10th of a nautical mile or 608 feet.

Media uses it as a unit of measurement because that's the extent of their pea-brained intelligence.

Media uses it as a unit of measurement because that's the extent of their pea-brained intelligence.

Either that or their estimate the intelligence of their average consumer.
