Seeing how Wisconsin has recently passed a concealed carry law (one of 2 states left that did not allow concealed carry), I have been thinking about the issue.
I started to wonder how many surveyors carry while working.
I'm not going to ask if you do, but rather, what percentage of surveyors do you think carry while working? Is it 2%, 50% or 90%?
I depends on where you live and work. There are many reasons to be armed besides just protection from other 2 legged predators. This is another case of one size does not fit all and will remain so until it no longer matters.

I don't, but there have been about a couple of times in the past years of work when I have thought about taking advantage of Kentucky's open carry policies - mainly for critters.
I carry my Taurus Judge once in awhile when out in some remote areas. Not concealed, but just in its holster. Snakes come to mind and so do lions. Never even came close to needing it, and glad of that.
I've also just strapped my machete on for show in some areas known to be populated by the meth crowd, even though there is no brush you ever want to cut (cactus tend to cut you back). Again, stick to doing your job and they leave you alone.
We keep a one in the glove compartment when were doing machine control installs in some bad parts of Atlanta. Having a $100K worth of tools and GPS Equipment being installed in the wrong area you tend to get a lot of on lookers.
95% of the time I'm strapped and never very far from something with more horsepower and more rounds.
.380 in the back pocket.
.40 in the door
.223 ranch rifle under the back seat.
I'm not worried about the critters as much as the two legged kind.

If I ever get around to hiring anyone, am considering making a valid CCW permit a condition of employment.

I was really impressed.
i carry my machete at all times. machete in one hand. prism pole in the other. and about a foot of pink flagging hanging out of my back pocket.lets people know that you are part of a crew and usually nobody messes with me except for the occasional crackhead trying to bum some change or a cigarette.
there must not be that many or else there would be a lot less dozer and pan operators knocking over grade stakes and control points.
Consider me armed and dangerous, and approach with caution.
Most surveyors I know carry, whether legally or not. I personally am a CCW holder and carry as often as I can.

I don't, and I don't think I know anyone in my area that does, but I could be wrong. I have heard of some in the coalfield mountains carrying, along with a few down in the Dismal Swamp near Virginia Beach/Portsmouth/Suffolk area carrying because of slithering critters mostly.
I'd say the number has to be 10% or less... but, of course, that is only a guess.

The tools I carry on a daily basis have been enough to handle every critter I've ever encountered.
I am rarely inside a metro area. Snakes, dogs, gators, hogs, horses, cows and other beasts that put up a facade of displeasure of my wandering thru their space aren't going to rip me off and will usually go the another way with a poke or display of defense.
You mean a lot more with an additional lower orifice.

I think Dad was talking to Granville Hogg or somebody else from that area at a VAS convention in Roanoke years ago and I overheard that.
