Better yet, have testing requirements for the various niche markets and certification specific to that skill set. I know guys whom are the local boundary gurus who have never staked a road or run a static session with GPS in their lives, are smart enough not to venture into that realm but their present licenssure would allow them if they were so motivated.
Have a general certification, and require 'merit badge' additional certification for Construction Staking, Construction Management, Environmental Services, GIS Data Manager, etc.

But once a person is approved, sits, and passes, that's it.

Every year 10% (or some chosen number) of licensed surveyors names are drawn at random. Each one of these 'selected' individuals would be discreetly contacted by a prospective client (a plant on the B.O.R. payroll) to perform some simple survey somewhere in their area.
Then a review of each surveyor's work could be evaluated; research, ethics, professionalism and accuracy.
You could probably make some good judgement from the quality of work that was turned in.

What offends me is that states that previously did not require education to be licensed now are going to...and there are members on their boards making this decision that do not have degrees...and never will!
I thankfully have my degree, but I think it is hypocritical. Don't get me wrong, I think we should have an educational requirement if we want to be respected as a profession. However, if this will be the case, then I think that those who are already licensed without education should have to earn their degrees when a board approves the educational requirement.
