So as not to hijack Nate's meth thread...

Do you carry in the field for purposes of defending yourself from pot patch proprietors, wild animals, etc.?
Can you think of other reasons to carry?

Over the years I've heard several stories of surveyors being killed by angry property owners. I don't think any of those surveyors were carrying. If they had been, the outcomes might have been diffeent.

Also, those of us who work in urban areas occasionally have to go into neighborhoods where we can be seen as easy targets, especially solo guys.

If you work for someone else, there is a good chance your company has a policy against carrying, but if you're legal and not breaking company policies, I don't see anything wrong with carrying.

Most of the work I do is in rural areas in the woods and mountains. I am more afraid of wild animals than I am of crazy property owners. I have only had to fire my weapon once. We were following a fence line down the mountain. The fenceline ended so we were trying to get back to the truck. I had one guy with me and one at the truck. We got turned around and lost. I called the third guy on the radio and had him listen for the shot to get a bearing on where we were. It worked and we found our way to the road.

I'm usually a solo guy and usually in safe places from people and wild critters.

Albeit I whole heartedly support a persons right to carry let alone defend himself, I am getting to the point where I don't want to have one more ounce hanging on me when I make my marches through the fields and woods.

We don't and can't because our company policies. But mostly it is our clients policies that do not allow us to carry.

In those cases were we are in really, really bad neighbor hoods, then we hire off duty deputies for security. And we leave the rod man with the base.

Generally not, I don't care for the extra weight either. When I was doing remote parcels, and I mean REMOTE!, I had a scabbard on the tripod that I packed my Mossberg 500 12ga.in. Biggest "worry" was moose, they can stomp the living poop out of you! Otherwise I would carry my .22 revolver, as I told a brusher one day, "I don't have to out run the bear, just out run you....I'll shoot you in the knee" He never walked close to me again!!

Yes I carry, as do most of the guys I work with. Our company allows it unless it is forbidden by a client. Here at the office, this is where it sits, in reach of my right hand.

That one is a Ruger SR9c. It is a subcompact 9mm with a sweet trigger.

I carry because I can. O&G projects do not allow it, and that's about the only time I'm not with one.

In 14 years of legally carrying, I've only drawn down on someone once, and that was about three months ago when someone was beating on my door late at night.

Every other time, the weapon is a last chance at getting away. I use my mind to keep me out of most of the binds that would find one needing one.

Now, that being said, I love my guns, flat out love them. I have many and accessorize my wardrobe with different pistols like my wife does with shoes!

I hope I never have to shoot someone, but I carry in case I have to.

I appreciate this post. I have never owned or carried.

But, this year I plan to purchase, due to the fears that the man may say no soon.

I carry on my hip a 9mm on rural jobs. I always have it with me everywhere I go, just not always on my side.

I always think of the lady (can't think of her name, but she used to reply on the old board) who found herself out in the boonies one day working all alone when she found herself surrounded by a pack of wild dogs! I wish I could remember how she got out of that mess (anyone remember the story?). She's carried every day since then.

Out of curiosity, say that an angry armed property owner did confront you and a gunfight ensued and you killed the guy on his property, what would your defense be? self defense? Would that hold water? Wouldnt it kind of be the same as if the guy banging on Kris' door had shot Kris?
