Subtitled when you want to facepalm, but can't.
Part of my route today took me by a courthouse in an un-named county, so I decided I'd drop off some Corner rec's, have them recorded and get copies..... It's a small county office- The Clerk and Recorder and 1 deputy- I think they hire a temp during election season- They used to have 1 deputy and one assistant but I think there was shake up and the commissioners removed some duties from the C&R- anyway I go in- It's a new deputy- haven't seen her before, but I hadn't been in there since early last October. The C&R isn't in-
Me- Hi- I'd like to record these and get copies. ( there are 7 sheets)
Her- Ummm- ok what are they? I haven't seen them before.
Me- They're Certified Corner Records- They're recorded at no charge and they go in those legal size blue binders on the high shelf just to your right as you go into the vault.
Her-Well- ##### (the C&R) isn't here- and she hasn't taught me how to do these- [hl]I'VE ONLY BEEN HERE SINCE LAST OCTOBER AND SHE HASN"T TAUGHT ME HOW TO RECORD YET. [/hl](emphasis mine) I'll just time stamp them and she'll have to record them when she comes back-
ME- Is she coming back today? I saw the ambulance headed west bound on the interstate as I was coming into town. ( I know the C&R is an EMT with the EMS system here)
Her- No- she's just not in today. But she can do it tomorrow when she comes in.
me- Ok thanks...

So, would I be right in guessing that you didn't show her your DOT badge and had made the mistake of taking off your mirror sunglasses before arrival at the office?

Footnote: I have had the experience in a certain rural Texas county of having to SHOW the deputies how to make certified copies of public records when the clerk herself wasn't in office.

I guess numbskulls at the recorder's office is a national thing...I was thinking we had a corner on the market here in Oklahoma. And my affectionate term of "hens and biddies" is by no means sexist...I have in 50 years never seen a male employee at the Registrar's office.

The low hum of the "cluck-cluck" somehow lulls me into a glassy eyed complacency...I believe anything could happen there and it wouldn't surprise me.

We have had a dude in an adjoining county for something like eight years. Almost as rare as hen's teeth, but not quite.

As long as you get it there to the desk. Maybe take a picture of it at the office, heck it's probably the first one of the year

A number of years ago I was speaking with our Recorder about the difficulties I was having with her staff. She apologized, and then said "Unfortunately, I cannot afford to pay people who can think." I suppressed my immediate impuls and walked away... But this is who is taking care of our public records!

"All they do is file stuff and make copies" a local politician once said after eliminating the office and sharing the duties with another. I pray to God his deed, birth certificate, dd214, etc. is the next one to get lost.
My other favorite from a local politico is "Anyone with benefits should be happy with $20k a year" thus begins the revolving door...

Steve
