Just got the message that I have been hired again at the City of Lawton. I will be Michael's rod man now instead of his boss. I have found the perfect spot finally. I so missed the hunt after the first year of retirement.
I now will be a contributor to our city again.
Dreams can happen.
You going to be a double dipper? Where are you going to live now you have sold your house?
Great cartoon!
If you want to do all of those and then some just work for yourself and have all the fun.
I call this a WIN / WIN !
Win for you and a win for Michael.
Congrats to both of you.

I'm all good Stephen. I took the city retirement and put it in my 401K plan so I am not drawing from the city. That let me back in to start over like any new employee. I so missed my city and my work for them,. I"M BACK...,,.
I did the work for yourself thing Ben. It just was not as satisfying as working for my city. I really missed being a part of my community and helping them out with maps and stuff. I will make Michael a great hand.
Must be rough for active, healthy people who have retired. From what I see and hear they don't have much to do and often yearn for times past. Glad to hear that you will be gainfully occupied again and doing something you enjoy. I do expect you to develop callouses on your tongue from biting it when you want to give advice.

Congrats on the new job.
Just stick with it and learn all you can.
Before you know it, you'll be promoted to instrument man and you never know, one day, on down the road, you might just be the boss, beware though, that isn't always what you dream it might be.
It's a great profession to get in and if you stick with it and the City of Lawton you might just be able to retire on down the road.
Just keep your nose to the grindstone, your mind sharp and your machete honed.
Merry Christmas Deral.
Deral,
congratulations with the new start ... I'm sure we will enjoy your Lawton blog again.
But why am I not surprised ?
I was browsing some old posts yesterday, one was about the passion of land surveying. I know a lot of people here are passionated about what they do for a living, even when they're (semi)retired. We have a wonderful job with a lot of different aspects, I don't have to tell you.
It's great that you can sit back, relax, taste from another life and then conclude that maybe the best is yet to come!
Enjoy your new career with your team mate and keep us posted about your adventures!
Happy Christmas from Belgium,
Christof.
Right on.
stop denying it...you're an addict!!
Back in the Saddle Again
I don't know, Radar...
Being as he's just coming out of retirement, this one might be more Deral's speed... ;o)

When I saw the reference to Lawton..I had to peek in...congratulations..I was stationed at Ft Sill in 1970/71, lived on Arlington Avenue in a garage apartment owned by a guy who worked at the Ford garage. Homer and his wife Flo...made our year in Lawton very enjoyable for both my wife and I, and, my son was born at Fort Sill. My wife's father was originally from Kemp, OK and we spent every other weekend at her grandparents house in Kemp. Loved the state. I was a Army construction surveyor sent to Ft Sill from Vietnam to be an Artillery Surveyor, which I didnt want to be, so spent the year and a half there as a clerk. Own my own surveying and mapping company in upstate New York..getting close to retirement...but like you..I am afraid i couldnt stand it...cant fish every day...
Anyway..thanks for letting me add my two cents worth...and wish you luck on your new job.

Hope you get FULL benefits! Can’t wait for future posts!
PS: Being a rodman is much easier for an ole fart like you.;-)
Happy Holidays Deral and best wishes for the future.
Bill
congrats! welcome back!
Do rodmen have to pull those big ol' nasty MH lids up to get rod depths?
Gee...I sure hope you don't hurt anything "geriatric". 😉
good luck youngster

When anyone talks to me about retiring, I always state that it is not in my plans. I plan to keep surveying until someone plants me.
