First company I ever worked for had Dodge Vans.?ÿ They just had homemade equipment boxes in the back.?ÿ A few years down the road, they upgraded to 1-ton Ford Vans with actual shelving and boxes on the side panels.?ÿ They also had the cage behind the front seats to protect you from any torpedo's in case of hard braking.?ÿ The only thing I didn't like about those vans were that you didn't have side windows to see out of like the Dodges did.?ÿ Since then, I've worked out of Rangers (way to small), Astro Vans (POS),?ÿ F350 Crew Cab Long bed diesel (hydro work), half ton pickups and a Durango.?ÿ The worst to work out of was the Ranger since it was so small.?ÿ My favorite was the F-350.?ÿ Huge crew cab for putting equipment in.?ÿ It had a cab height shell on the bed that had side doors to access shelves on the inside.?ÿ It had big doors on the back that could be locked and you could jump up in and walk in.?ÿ Also had a roof rack that we strapped down 10' pvc pipe for storing a 3 meter invar rod.?ÿ Or we could strap down a john boat up there as well.?ÿ?ÿ

I've worked out of Rangers (way to small)

I had a Tacoma for 2 years. Space was definitely at a premium. I've also had F250's for several years. Given the choice between the space shortage and hustling an F250 around downtown Portland's back streets I'd take the smaller vehicle.?ÿ ?ÿ

Compared to what I've been working out of for the last 15 years, thinking I'm going to be s&itting in tall cotton. Won't be doing much offroading, but then most of the time I'm not anyway and when we do need them we have access to ATVs and snowmachines. One of the favorite parts of my gig is the exercise I get which helps keep me in shape for hunting season.?ÿ

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

In some circumstances and certain places a smaller vehicle is the way to go.?ÿ?ÿ

@norman-oklahoma I'm pretty sure that these would be far from the ideal vehicle for Portland back streets. Just finding parking would be a pain. It's not an issue 99% of the time for me. Lots of space here, except maybe in winter with 6' snow berms along the roads make getting off the road difficult at times. I just don't ever see myself working in a big city like Portland. Not my cup of tea.

@norman-oklahoma that's outstanding! I'd have to admit that this mode of transportation has never crossed my mind!

@james-vianna I had an Isuzu trooper and liked it fine.?ÿ The front locking hubs got "sticky" to release after being engaged, and the door hinges came loose, so added a backing plate inside the door.

@norman-oklahoma?ÿ

Solo surveyor but I use a Daihatsu Terios which is fine, much cheaper than a truck.

Basically a first generation RAV4, doesn't have low range box but if it's that wet/steep safer to be walking anyway.

@lukenz I have an old 96 RAV4. Just over 400k on the odometer and runs like a champ. Has a locking differential that puts power to all 4 wheels and it will climb just about anything. My winter skiing ride.

@williwaw?ÿ

Yep same running gear in Terios, was 8k vs 30k for 4wd ute with same mileage. Only done 100k but I'll be happy to get 200k without any major as Surveying hard on a combustion engine with all the spot start ferrying gear up and down the road. Figure with it not having low range if I burn clutch out it is still a heck of a lot cheaper than a ute.

?ÿ

Hoping only to replace it with an EV when 4wd ones become available in this size.

@williwaw?ÿ

I found out a couple weeks ago there are zero rental trucks to be had in our city...and no expectations to have any for a while. Some repairs were needed to the companies 2013 Silverado and they were hoping to get a rental for the day.?ÿ

A rental was my backup plan for my 16 year old Silverado I get mileage to drive. Since I am solo I can drive my 84 Oldsmobile for work in the summer...but when the snow flies it gets parked for the winter.?ÿ

With the availability issues people should take care of what they have right now, since it could be hard or expensive to replace.?ÿ

@350rocketmike?ÿ

Hard to believe, I'm sure that just the other day I saw square kilometer sized yards of stockpiled new cars that were unable to be sold. Maybe that was VW.

@richard-imrie I don't know if this was the case with what you saw but I hear that there are a lot of vehicles sitting at lots waiting for missing parts before they can be sold.?ÿ
