Any opinions on Nikon AE-7 auto level?

What would you consider "an affordable price" for a Wild/Leica NA2?

I have a "spare" Leica NA2 in excellent condition that needs a new home.?ÿ

I don't think that you could go wrong with any of the usual brand name levels, if it's in good condition.?ÿ They're simple instruments, and unless they have been thrown around, they'll last almost forever.

I don't get hung up on getting the strongest mag/power either.?ÿ Unless you're doing long level runs on flat terrain, a 24X will do the trick same as a 34X, for half the cost.

Used one for years and it has worked as expected.

That is what I thought as well, but was proven wrong by the Topcon AT-G2.

I set up the first four-telescope collimator (instrument testing stand) in Wyoming or Montana back in 1991, back when I was a Topcon dealer.?ÿ I initially tried using a series of brand-new Topcon AT-G2 levels (generally the same specifications as the Wild/Leica NA2) to check and adjust the two horizontal telescopes, but found that they were off enough to require readjustment every time I tried to use them.

Then i tried using a Wild NA2, found that it held adjustment very well.?ÿ So I bought the Leica NA2 mentioned above as a spare.?ÿ It did not disappoint either.

That collimator has not been used in close to 25 years, but it is still there, nothing removed.

In fact, I would always be in the market for a good price on a excellent condition NA2.

I generally agree with @jph, a level from a reputable brand should be fine. For most third order leveling, keeping the level in adjustment and using good leveling procedures (careful rod plumbing, selection of turning points, etc.) has a greater effect on good results than the specs of the level. But @glenn-borkenhagen has a point, some levels will more easily get thrown out of adjustment than others, and I have noticed my Topcon drifting out faster than my Wild did. I don't have any personal experience with Nikon levels.?ÿ
