A post below about hourly rates has some replies that indicate what rates are charged "around here" without any mention as to where "here" is. I understand some posters may not want their employers or employees to see their messages, but it would help quite a lot if everyone would at least mention the state they are referring. You can put it in your profile.;-)
I do not understand the desire for anonymity. I would not want to work for someone who made me fell I cannot speak my mind.
I'm much more fun and cuddly as Holy Cow.
How dare you say things like that about me!? I'd better never catch you around here!
Tee hee, jk. Seriously, though, my employer doesn't so much as require anonymity, but the policy heavily favors it. They are very good to me, otherwise, so I don't really mind.
Also, I like being able to muse about things like starting my own gig someday without fear of reprisal. Not so much that I fear the people I answer to, I just see no need to give some cohorts fodder for tear-down.

I work for a construction company that does a lot of government jobs, mostly state, some federal. I deal with a different inspector and engineer on just about every job. The company I work for has no strict policy about posting things that happen on a job that I know of. I probably should have actually read that manual they gave me. It's just that I don't want my opinions reflecting badly on the company I work for when I have had a bad day. On the old board, I could google Ja*** Ro***** Surveyor and my post at RPLS.com would come up.
I really have no objection to anyone here knowing who I am. I just don't want it showing up on google.
I can understand your point of view and if it wasn't for google, I would agree. I'm just presenting the other side of the coin.

Same here, I have no problem with people knowing who I am, but I think the whole linking messages to twitter/facebook and having it continually indexed in Google FOREVER has gotten out of hand. For that reason only I do not post under my name.
I also do not stir the pot and "hide" under a false name, so I see no reason anybody would have a problem with my name.
I totally agree with the opinion of "why" being anonymous. However this topic is well covered and many posters have jobs where they just plain old do not want the boss to know they are goofing off on the computer on company time. Or even at their home computer, sometimes talking smack about work related things.
I think that if somebody puts a real effort into discovering some secret identity, send an email to Wendell with some specific "complaints". Aside from that..... get over it and move on. Just because there is a post you don't agree with does not mean you need to reply.
Some of you old timers here (and the old POB thread) likely remember a certain Hub Northing, and the infamous TDD, or previously known as Ted Dura. Claims to fame in their own respective worlds, but not fitting for Wendell's website.
Kudo's to Wendell for removing the P & R topic line. I almost think this thread is approaching that realm??? Wendell?
As usual, Go Red Wings....lol
I don't have a problem with hidden identities. Just locations. When someone says what happens around here, please give us a general idea where that is.;-)
I am anonymous, but easily identifiable. I am that handsome devil that has roadhand tatooed on the back of my arms..
I've never tried to conceal my identity.
For those of you that are interested, here's a link:
I choose to be anonymous. In this day and age of data mining, it makes perfect sense to keep as much privacy as possible. That beingv said, just ask if you want to know.
There are folks in Nebraska that think my name is Ray (short for RADAR) LOL
I agree with Steve; it would be nice to at least see where you're from, sometimes.
And I agree with the good folks who seem to dislike evasion of privacy; to which extent do we let Big Brother help? :-S
I hope everyone is having a great day; I know I am.

Obviously I have no objection to ID names, because I use one. Not for any particular reason. Besides I like the photo I use as an avatar. (I look worse in person. Maybe I can find a Jabba the Hut photo and change over?)
The one item that I DO wish everyone would post is their location. If someone needs help with something and they are geographically close, I may be able to get together with them and help them out with their problem. If you list as being in Alaska, I know a "drop in" is out of the question.
heh... Paden takin' a bird strike...
I just googled myself again and I still get a post from the pobonline forum 4 1/2 years ago on the first page of google. Luckily it was one of my better post. 😀

It's a dilemma. On the one hand, statutes and case law are different in various states, so many questions can't be evaluated without knowing which state the property is in. But if the poster mentions which the state is in, and then an interested person reads some other posts by the same poster, usually the interested person could figure out which state the poster is from.
Another problem is states with small populations. If you mention something really unusual that happened in a lightly populated state, there is a good chance that an interested person from that state will come upon the Surveyor Connect post while googling about the incident, and then add whatever the Surveyor Connect post says to what the interested person already heard from the news, neighhors, scuttlebutt, etc., which could lead to violating surveyor-client confidentiality.

This is about the only place on the web that I am who I am.
that's funny
