Thanks for the pictures. Looks like a "pincushion" at the Arizona Initial Point.

Cools pics, thanks again.

I've been there a couple times, always amazes me.....

I worked in Nebraska for 15 years and the PLSS seemed to be a good fit, there. Nice and flat, easy. Heck, you could tie a rag to the wagon wheel, measure the circumference, sit on the buckboard with your compass and count revolutions, and many did;-)

Then I moved to Washington and was like WTF?! Can you imagine a surveyor, standing at the Willamette stone, looking up that steep slope to the north and saying, "They want me to go to Spokane from here? 66 feet at a time!? Yea, right.......

Radar

Edit-I thought that that was the initial point for Utah too, but was told it was for Salt Lake City. The initial point is south and east of there, by quite a bit;-)

Daryl,

As always great pics. As a traveling surveyor like yourself, I'm always on the look out for these type of sites, while traveling the globe for work, or on vacation. I'm out in Scottsdale Arizona for a temp 3-month assigment for my new job with HGPS.

Do you have a Lat-Long-Ellip Ht for the AZ Initial Point?
I see Dave Minkel, NGS-AZ State Advisor frequently, so I'm sure Dave know's of it's location. Be a fun weekend adventure. Peak of the Arizona cactus flowering/bloom a few weeks away. Locals tell me that'll be end of May/early June.

Do you have a Lat-Long-Ellip Ht for the AZ Initial Point?

This is based on NAD83(1992):
Latitude 33º22'37.82695" N
Longitude 112º18'21.99800" N
Ellipsoid Height 1062.264'

I see Dave Minkel, NGS-AZ State Advisor frequently, so I'm sure Dave know's of it's location.

It's at the south end of 115th Avenue, where 115th Avenue curves west and becomes Baseline Road. Park at the base of the hill and start hiking.

And Dave should know where it's at. NGS has a monument up there too.

Be a fun weekend adventure. Peak of the Arizona cactus flowering/bloom a few weeks away. Locals tell me that'll be end of May/early June.

It's only fun if it's not blazing hot out or if NASCAR isn't having a race at PIR.

Then it's a nightmare.

Fairbanks

As I recall, that initial point is somewhere within the Grounds of Ft. Wainright isn't it?

I vaguely remember some sort of party with a bunch of the Camp 12 people. Does the naked person have something to do with that?

Fairbanks

Does anybody know if there is access up to the Fairbanks IP? It does show up on the Fort property based on the topo. Is this a locked down portion of the fort? I hope to get up there next time I am in the area.

I made it to the Seward Meridian 3 weeks ago for my 16th Initial Point.

Here is a private website with photos and coordinates for most Initial Points.Initial Points

Heading to the Black Hills for the week to meet up with Jerry Penry. Last fall we went into the Black Hills Initial Point.

Yeah. That was my 2nd year with Camp 12. Nenana to Eileson.

At the IP, I remembered 2 BCs in a large conc slab and some sort of tower nearby.

It is a PLSO sponsored one, I'll bet there is even a very neat (plastic) compass inside the box.
