I live in Europe and have got a surveyors degree but topography is actually my side hustle that I do on occasion based on if the project is easily manageable or if I got a handyman available and free time as well to take on bigger jobs etc. lately I've been feeling burned out by my main job (lots of factors I cant control, working with crowds, etc) and I'm considering whether I could take on surveying as my main job. I'm an introverted person and prefer to work by myself (and trusted associates) most of the time

while I can manage my main job I don't really like it, surveying on the other hand I find enjoyable but more stressful as well. You always got all of these factors you got to take into account like will the equipment work will I get decent satellite coverage will the radio communication between the unit and the base hold sufficient connection do I have to bring a helper will I estimate the work correctly so I don't end up underpaid or have to ask for more money along the way will every little thing fall into place. And being OCD and worrisome from my nature causes lots of sleepless nights. So who knows shall I take the plunge or look onto something more straightforward

i can always work for some office where most of that stress falls to the boss but wages here are so underpaid that it would be best to just perform some menial mundane job that doesn't even require a degree in something

I find it interesting that therock003 describes mostly technical issues as possible sources of stress. From what I've read on this board, and from my experience while adjudicating the value of property for tax purposes as a justice of the peace, I would think encountering legally ambiguous situations would be more stressful than the technical difficulties. With the technical difficulties, once they're resolved, they're done with. The ambiguous situations can linger for generations.

?ÿ

Examples of ambiguous situations:

  • pincushions
  • measurements in deeds or plats do not match location of found monuments
  • no monuments or measurements available, deciding whether to rely on evidence of occupation
  • adverse possession and similar concepts

You can't know until you try it out for yourself.

Some people walked home before lunch and others have kept on the trail for a lifetime.'

Life is what you make of it or else it will make you, one way or another.

What is there to lose if it doesn't work out as well as you had hoped? You say you can "always work for some office". If that is the case then you have a safety net. It is not like you are walking a tightrope 20 stories above the ground. You have the net to catch you, so go out and take the chance on finding something you will really like. The only way to dance with the prettiest girl is to ask her. If you are afraid she'll say no, then you will never know what could have been.

I take it that your "main job" is not surveying. Why not go work for a surveyor? Being your own boss is very rewarding, but if you do it, technical issues will be the least of your stressors.

Nevertheless, it is plain that you really dislike your "main job". One thing I have going for me is that I have no trouble getting up in the morning and going to work. That's worth a lot. So it sounds to me like you really need to make a change, but I'm not convinced that going into business for yourself is quite the right thing for you at this time.?ÿ ?ÿ

My Wage

ƒ??I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.

For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.

I worked for a menialƒ??s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.ƒ?

-Jessie B. Rittenhouse

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
