it takes 24 days for prickly pear cactus tines to fester and pop out of a surveyor??s knees...
Got caught in the back & back of leg 30 years ago by a Honey Locust branch. Two spots festered up and popped out in 2 weeks. Each was about the size of a .22 bullet. Have 3 spots that still fester up and leak puss for a week every 10 years or so.?ÿ I should get them pulled out sometime. Maybe when/if I retire.
There is something quite humorous about watching a friend trying to ride his kids mini-bike, only to have it stall when it runs outta gas and unceremoniously dump him into a prickly pear patch.?ÿ It is very sobering (literally, in this case) when your attempt to help said friend stand up ends up with you also falling into said prickly pear patch...
Prickly pear was invented by the Devil himself.?ÿ At about age 12 I tripped while trying to get an old cow headed into a corral one morning before school.?ÿ Went flat out/belly first, with arms extended into a big patch of that stuff.?ÿ Removing my jeans sounded a lot like a Velcro strap being loosened.?ÿ Palms, forearms, chest, belly and legs. One million little stickers, minimum.?ÿ I may have said some bad words that young boys aren't supposed to say.
About ten years ago I hired a young nursing student, Sofia, to care for my mother during the evenings. Sofia was born in Durango, Mexico, made her way up here when she a tyke and eventually became a US citizen.?ÿ She cooked for my mother in the evenings and it didn't take me long to start showing up around dinner time.?ÿ One evening she whipped up some huevos revueltos (scrambled eggs) with jalapenos and nopalitos.?ÿ?ÿNopalitos are the tender young leaves of the prickly pear.?ÿ Hopefully picked before they develop their needles.?ÿ Sofia bought them canned from the supermercado but it didn't take me long to bring her fresh ones.?ÿ?ÿ
?ÿWhile I avoid (if possible) thrashing around in prickly pear patches I love scrambled eggs con jalapenos y nopalitos...yummy.?ÿ?ÿ
Would have to be con nopalitos only for me.?ÿ No hollowpeenos getting anywhere near my mouth.

Prickly Pear Jelly is delicious. It's a staple in many Florida kitchens.

A friend turned me onto a recipe for making mead with prickly pear fruit that is just out of this world. Now trying to find prickly pears in Alaska is a bit of a chore, but the end result is simply out of this world! Taking a blow torch to the fruit is the way to go because those spines on the fruit are unforgiving.?ÿ

Just because I'm paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.
Years ago I was cutting wild plum bushes and got a thorn stuck in the middle knuckle of my middle finger. After a day or two, I went to the local clinic. The doctor told me it would fester up and pop out in a few days and give me an antibiotic to keep it from festering up.
A week later the skin had healed up over the thorn but I could tell the thorn was still there. I went back to the same clinic but requested a different doctor. He took an x-ray, then cut my finger open and removed a thorn about 5/8" long that was laying right below the skin beside the tendon in the upper part of the finger.
Really messed up my brush cutting for a few weeks.

The Panara Bread shops around here usually have some flavor of "prickly pear" iced tea in the options.?ÿ Love to mix and match there.?ÿ I remember lots of prickly pear options in Las Cruces restaurants.?ÿ
