After I get home, hopefully the list of errors that Stephen so kindly provided may well give me insights on what is causing the issue.
Are you booting directly from the DVD? If so, DON'T. If not, you're pass my IT expertise.
The steps I gave are when you run the setup program from the device, not autostart or booting from the device. From your original post it states that you are booting from the DVD, but I'm sure you've tried multiple scenarios.
Yes, I have tried multiple scenarios. Booting from the dvd results in a message stating that if I don't want a clean install to run from windows. When I run from windows, I promptly get asked for the product key. I have read that one needs to run from windows (like in the post Stephan put up) in order for the product key to carry over.
I got an email from Carlson when they came out with 2016 that said to wait about windows 10, wasn't quite ready yet or something similar to that.

Is the Windows install on the unit the ORIGINAL that came with the unit? The product key would be on the holographic sticker. You might just extract the product key that is on the unit and compare it to that on the sticker. One thought is that Microsoft is asking for a product key because it's determined (via Windows Genuine Advantage) that your product key is no good.
In any case, it'd be more work, but you could always wipe the machine, re-install 7, update, then install 10 over it.

I also wonder if TGO will run in Windows 10. I'm on the verge of running the update to 10 so hopefully somebody will chime in with answers.
Well I took the plunge yesterday and went to Windows 10. I used their tool to download it which was a 5 hr process. I had previously signed up before July29 by clicking the windows thing in the lower right corner. Every time I clicked it after July 29 it said to wait. I finally got tired of waiting and took matters in my own hands with their tool. The install went smoothly and after a few hours I had things looking close to the way I had it in Windows 7. Today I'll start testing all my various programs to ensure they are working. All in all, it wasn't as painful as I had anticipated.

Yes, the original windows that came with the machine. Claims that windows is activated and good. Kinda suspecting the machine has "issues" which may be the root cause.
When time allows, I will likely "update" another machine to find out the consequences I will have to deal with. Wanted to test run on a machine of "least" value to me at the moment.
Of course, I could just let things be as others have suggested......
Well I have been testing all my programs in W 10. So far the only two that don't work is TGO and Trimble's convert to Rinex.
Here is a list of the ones that work:
Pathfinder Office 4.1
Corpscon 6
Rinex Dates 1.7
TBC 3.1
Global Mapper 11
Terrain Navigator Pro 10.3
NGS forward and inverse
Carlson 2006
CCleaner
Malewarebytes
Irfanview
EM Client

Have you tried the most recent version? That program is so straightforward that I'm surprised that an OS upgrade would break it.
John, post: 332131, member: 791 wrote: Has been futile.
I found out that the Win7 product key is not used for win10. Yes, I should have known that. I had no idea that the key would supposedly be populated in a "couple days" instead of immediately. Oh well, no big deal. Just choose "not now" type thing. Yea, all right.
So, booting to the DVD, I started and chose "skip". Then a step or two later get to the message that if I want an "upgrade" instead of a clean install, to start the DVD after I had win7 going. Ok. Well, get to the part where I'm told to enter the product key that I don't have and was not given. No option to skip or do later. None at all.
Scared to even try other machines. Would like to test things on that machine first to make sure I"m good with it before going hog wild on my other machines......
Open to suggestions from those who have been through this, thanks.
I tried the upgrade with a computer with windows 7.
I am now the proud owner of a new computer. It locked my old one up solid. It only partially installed and let me get to the log in screen. After that it just crashed and I couldn't do anything except log in and crash.
My new computer has windows 8 and I am scared to upgrade to 10.

Which is the basic premise behind why I wanted to try the upgrade on the machine I care less about than my others. On the computers I care about, it could go well or wind up being an expensive paperweight....

No, I hadn't tried that yet. It actually doesn't bother me too much since I'm retired now and haven't had to convert a file to Rinex for a long while.
You're right though, I'll see about getting the latest version.

I now have the latest version of Trimble's convert to Rinex but it still doesn't run. Here is a screen shot of how far it gets before crashing.
I noticed on Facebook today that our exiled curmudgeon-in-chief, "Ted-d-bear" Dura, has compared Windows 10 to the great censoring firewall of the Chinese government. It's only a matter of time, you know....
ammo up
I'm glad he's well and feeling good. Brought a tear to my eye...;-)

When I read "curmudgeon-in-chief", I first thought you were referring to Mr McMillan. I've only been reading here for about two years, so I completely missed the TDD days that everyone speaks so fondly(?) of[emoji6]

I've been tempted and was set to go, then pulled back.
I didn't click on any offers and then today my laptop had rebooted due to an update. That was okay then the log file listed many Failed to complete or similar messages to update to Win 10.
I just found this on my drive and assume at some time sneaky Windows did actually download a heap of stuff in expectedness of my buckling at the knees and submitting to their barrage of demands.
There are a heap of files in the Drivers folder.
I was concerned as its a laptop (Toshiba) I'd have to search and find all the drivers myself.
Does Windows do that or is it just potluck and hope for best in regards to that side?
I could see it not working in many areas if drivers aren't there.

Me too. We should be very cautious. lots of reports of failed upgrades, and bricked machines.
I have made several tries with the downloaded ISO. I suspect the biggest problem is the integrity of the download and no ability to check the checksum. I find it amazing that MS does not provide the checksum hash or provide the ability to download with a torrent (automatic verification of the data)
Perhaps a physical CD or USB provided by MS is the answer.
I have searched for a torrent but have found none.
(the Betas worked fine)
Two computers done so far. The first one was when MS told me it was ready to do the upgrade. No issues and so far I like it. Did seem kind of slow this morning, but I have been so busy that I can't investigate it out. Maybe today. The second machine was a touch screen. I downloaded the ISO and ran it once it downloaded. No issues on that machine either. Still on the fence about this software. Time will tell.
FWIW, I set my personal Windows 8.1 laptop to upgrade before going to bed Tuesday night, and when I woke up it was done. No muss, no fuss.

I did my 8.1 laptop at home Saturday night. It rebooted a couple of times, and in about three hours it was done. I haven't had a chance to do much with it yet, but the upgrade process was pretty painless.
