I'm going more and more to no legend drawings.

@mightymoe I think that's probably better than putting items in the legend that aren't even on the map.?ÿ I take it your state doesn't require legends on maps?

@allen-wrench

I don't think any of the offices I've ever worked at had me edit the legends for different drawings. As you know, some legends are very long. Maybe, one day, someone will come up with a CAD add-on program that scans a drawing for symbols and modifies the legend accordingly.

I have a full legend in my templates and customize accordingly. Enough ALTA clients have asked ƒ??well whereƒ??s this gas meter listed in the legend?ƒ? for me to keep doing it. And while itƒ??s a pain to keep track of every single symbol in the drawing, they do have a point.?ÿ

@bstrand

I can't think of any agency that requires legends by regulation or statute. DOT and SEO both have fairly laid out legend requirements.?ÿ

I think it would be disconcerting to be planning some digging and see gas line in the legend and not be able to find it. Was a layer turned off when it was printed? Did they leave it out? Do we need to hire someone to locate it??ÿ

Just one example.?ÿ

It wasn't that long ago we were hand drafting, we can certainly take the time to remove unused legend entries??ÿ

@mightymoe

Do you fully label every feature? Or do you just assume people will know what you mean??ÿ

When using a map, if I see it in the legend I expect to find it on the map. As a consumer I don't want a huge legend to sort through if there are only a few items on the map. I feel it is a better product with only the needed legend items. If it is too much effort to create that product so be it. I think it is worth the time.

Yes, section line typ., property line typ. found 2" aluminum cap per PLS xxxx, Right of way line typ. ect.

Instead of POB with point of beginning noted in the legend I spell it out at the point of beginning shown on the plat and label the monument. This can't be done for each drawing.

I'm finding that it often saves room and there is less not more clutter on the drawing.?ÿ

Sometimes I end up with a very small legend with 5 or so items.

I sent out a drawing this morning for a pipeline easement. No legend and no need for one.?ÿ

?ÿ
