cad mainly, like to stay under 1k, ssd for sure.
not a laptop, these guys are my favorite builders at the moment
they are called refurbished, everything I've seen from them are brand new components in an old case.
I would get a video card and at least 12gb of ram before a SSD

Oh, well if we are suggesting things completely against the OP's request, I say ditch the laptop, and buy a fender FMT special edition telecaster guitar........ Also not a laptop, but currently my favorite builders at the moment
I know many people on this thread dont like Dell (I've only had good service. Maybe I have been lucky). We have gotten about 5 different models of the Precision in the past year (all arounf 1k) on auction or second hand (basically new) and they are well worth the money. I have a M6800. 32gig ram,250gb SSd with 1tb normal hdd, nvidia k3100 quadro card. Paid R14000 (around $1100) 8 months ago. Bought second hand and still had service agreement. It is a beast. It would charge and Dell came out. Replaced charger then motherboard then ram then graphics card then charging port and eventually it was actually a faulty battery. All replaced at no cost. So even though it was second hand they replaced so much they made it new. I also have had HP and they are nice. I just have good exerienxe with Dell so that my 2cents

I don't recommend a laptop when it is possible to get two puters of what the puter power he wants for what he wants to spend.
An i7 processor alone costs $350å± and an i5 process $250å±.
Video card for one of these is maybe $50 and they are super fast.
Then if it is a laptop, then it is gonna take all that and probably more to get one.
6 vs 1/2 doz
I just bought an Asus G752 laptop and it its very fast, has an ssd drive, discrete graphics card and ram can be upgraded to 64GB. It is however a gaming laptop (I have no interest in gaming) but I bought it for the specs. Came to about âÂ1200. These things are usually priced better in the US so you should get it for about $1000

Surface Pro 4 or Surface Book. They cost just a little bit more, but there are many reasons as to why I didn't mind. Quality and speed being on top of that list, and total lack of pre-installed bloatware being somewhere near the top as well.
Outside of those options I would look at Asus. I recently ordered one for the wife and was pleasantly surprised that it also totally lacked bloatware. I utterly abhor the "HP print service" or "solution center" or 100 other things. I've had nothing but trouble with all the little Lenovo "bells and whistles" as well, like their wifi manager, power manager, etc. Also I absolutely do not want trial versions of ANYTHING, especially McAfee or Norton.

I am in the US and my ASUS laptop cost me $2,500.

What were the specs my one came with 16gb ram, 3gb nvidia geoforce, 256gb, ssd,17" screen
etch a sketch. Heard the batteries last forever and they are pretty lightweight to carry around. Memory sucks tho.

Sounds a lot like yours, I know that it is an I-7 and also has a 1 TB hard drive. It was ordered to be an autocad work station. May be my computer dealer made $1,500 profit.

last year I tried 2 different laptops that had discreet graphics (2 graphic cards) (for gamers) and neither one worked with autocad 16/windows 10.
The third one I tried worked (hp spectre - only had the built in graphics)
What are you doing in CAD?
Will you be working with any large TINs, aerial images, or LiDAR data?
Are you using C3D or some other resource hungry CAD program?
Do you work with large photos?
Are you planning to use a photogrammetric software like Pix 4D?
I can't say, but I have heard more than one computer geek say that Asus puts out the best product. (but they might be like a lot of car guys that develop a loyalty to one brand of car). I like having a laptop as my main computer. I have it hooked to two monitors @ my desk, but can unplug it if I need to take it somewhere. Seems to work CAD as well as desktops around here....but maybe I'm just a slower CAD operator and don't need the speed.

great question. if any of the above, you need a higher end laptop, probably one that is intended for gaming with a great graphics card.
dual drives is a very good option. boot and put programs on a 240GB SSD (about $65) and backup/store files on a second drive.
you can meet the price goal of $1000 if you buy used. something like this is what I have: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sager-P650SE-NP8651-i7-4710HQ-2-6GHz-16GB-RAM-GTX-970m-Gaming-Laptop-/162251917148?hash=item25c6f7c75c:g:JRAAAOSw65FXte8N
ram is cheap, add if needed.
I freakin' love my Surface Pro 4, but you aren't going to get anywhere near $1,000 for one with capable specs.
I'm not one to recommend Dell anything, but I hear really great things about the Dell XPS 13 and 15 laptops and supposedly you can configure them pretty nicely for around $1,000.
