Have ancient Jett DC (similar to Carlson Surveyor).
After multiple attempts at instll (several failing with "not enough room" reports, even though there was), it appeared to finally complete installation from the PC, then finalized on the DC. It installed on "System CF".
There's the directory "TPS TopSURV".
In that, are many directories; many files, including "TopSURV.exe". But it's only 60KB in size...seems small.
More important, it won't run at all:
"Cannont find 'TopSURV' (or one of its components; make sure the path yadda yadda)".

I've rebooted the unit, but still no dice.

Any ideas where to go from here?

It's been a really long time since I had access to one of those units.
Is there an autoexec.bat file in the root directory?
If so, list its contents.
If there is a "PATH=[stuff and things]" I'll bet therein may lie a solution.

If by "root directory", you mean in "My Computer", no. nada.
If you mean in SystemCF, there's no autoexec.bat there either. That's where the directory for TPS TopSurv is, as well as SurvStar (where SurvCE is).
I know next to nothing about Windows CE. I can't even find a "find file" menu option.

But now that I can actually see all the individual files, in Windows Explorer, perhaps someone running TopSURV 8 (or any other version for that matter)on an older Carlson Explorer or JETT DC, might report how big TopSURV.exe should be. If I can upack the CAB, I might be able to just drag and drop the file now.

The super old winCE devices had a bunch of different processors to choose from, and you needed to install the processor-version of the app.

WinCE.net (I think that was CE version 4+) did away with processor specific app compilers.

Thanks.
As far as I can tell, it's a Two Tech Jett controller, running an "ARM-WINCE" processor.
The OS is Windows CE.NET, version 4.2, with 40 mb of ram.

In another thread, dshearon suggested:
> The FC-2200 was a Jet box. Topsurv 7 or 8 should load onto it if you have the right installer file.

On Topcon's support site, many of the versions of the software come in these processor specific flavors, if this is what you mean by processor specific:

For FC 2200 and FC 2500
Allegro CX
TC
RR
Win Mobile

I think I've tried the FC2200 and got a different warning (like this is not the right kind of unit or something), but I may have to try again. The version I'm getting the current message with is Win Mobile.

Besides the specific model also your cab- or exe file should target the correct WinCe version. The generated program code will be different for an WinCe 4.x 5 or 6.
And you probably have to look out also for different screen sizes/layout.

Everybody's answering about the mechanics of loading the software. As far as loading the software, here are the minimum requirements:

1. Display 240X320 or 320X240 pixels,
2. 64 Mb RAM and 50 Mb flash disk space (internal)
3. Windows CE.NET version 4.2 or higher, or Windows Mobile Version 6.2 or higher.

I believe the Jet XL meets or exceeds those requirements.

But the real question is licensing. Topcon will no longer provide activation codes for TopSURV unless you own the license and are merely moving it from one device to another. And even then, they may ask questions.

They have moved on to Magnet software and Magnet has no build that runs on any version of CE except CE 6. About the only devices with CE 6 that I know of are their FC-2600 and the operating system they are using on their onboard Magnet versions.

Jerry:
Thanks for the information. I don't think my model is the XL...It's showing that it's only got 40mb of RAM, so I may be out of luck there. The "not enough room" messages I got were during the installation on the unit to the internal CF card.

The error message running the program though might well be due to insufficient RAM if, for example, there wasn't enough room for all the components, libraries, etc. to load. If you're certain of the 64mb requirement, I'll give up.

As for the licensing, I read on Topcon's support site that the software can be run without a license in demo mode which limits the number of points to 20 I believe. I'm assuming that refers to the older versions on their site (7.3, 7.5, 7.5.2 etc).

But it's all moot if the machine I have can't run it. It's got SurvCE on it, which I'm not thrilled about; I wanted to try TopSurv. Life goes on.
