I am hoping there is a savior out there that can help me out with this one:
I have an extremely large base map (206 MB) that must be xref'd into my drawing to prevent bogging down performance and for proprietary issues. This referenced drawing is located on a network drive of a large organization. So this large .dwg is referenced in my drawing and I want to clip out a small portion of it and bind into drawing. I notice when the xref is clipped (using xclip) and I bind in drawing, the entirety of the referenced drawing is now in my new drawing. This obviously is not feasible due to performance issues when trying to trim, clip, etc. something of that size. Once it is binded, I've tried "maptrim", "explode", etc., and the commands just jam up the computer. Mind you, i'm running 16gb of RAM but pulling a C3D license from a network, so this isn't solely a hardware issue.
My work around:
Open in Microstation V8i Select (Yes, that word we dislike), reference in the .dgn version of this large drawing. Use "clip boundary", and then "merge to master". Then I save as a .dwg and open in C3d. All my linework is there with correct properties. That's been my work around so far, but I'd rather figure a solution to the problem rather than put a band aid on it.

My typical workaround is open the big 200mb dwg.
Save as to wherever.
Then start erasing everything I don't want.
Then xref that new 5mb dwg instead.
