When you start a new drawing in Carlson, it prompts you for a DWT file.?ÿ My understanding is that settings are mainly stored in various external files, so what is stored in (for example) the default "SURV.dwt" file??ÿ
Layers, layer filters, any standard paperspace layouts you want loaded with your base drawing, your favorite state plane (or other) coordinate system settings, text style to start with.
Can you set it to load all your settings when you start a new drawing (for example, insert all your layers, text styles, annotation, etc.)?
In the "Drawing Setup" window, it gives you the option to Use Drawing Template or Use Configuration.?ÿ I searched the help file for information on this, but the window/options in the help file don't match the one in my software.
Yes, that is my understanding. You can have all of your layers, annotation settings, linetypes, etc. saved in your *.dwt file, and it will load each time you use that dwt file.
Under settings, Carlson configure, startup settings, you can browse and select your template drawing.
When I created my templates on Carlson, I took the existing opening page and created a drawing with all the setting, perks, bells and whistles I wanted and saved it into the files.
Then I erased all the drawing and points and saved the blank drawing as "My Template".
Now when I open Carson it is set just where I want to begin on a new drawing.
My startup box doesn't look like that one.?ÿ I'm running 2018, so maybe they moved stuff around.
With Carlson configured like the screen you posted, do you still have to manually load the various setting files or do they come in with the template like A. Harris and Jimmy suggest?
?ÿ
I didn't think it saved all those options (like the .la, .cfg .adf, .fld, etc.) as part of the template.?ÿ If it keeps all that stuff in the .dwt file, similar to the way Civil3D does, that would be great.
I haven't found a way to edit the dwt files, yet.?ÿ I'm running 2018 Intellicad.?ÿ?ÿ?ÿ I did have some specific layers, etc, set up previously that I can't seem to do now.
In the 2014 version it was a matter of opening the dwt file, now I get a "read only" message if I open the dwt.

Foggy not sure about Intellicad but running on top of Autocad you can open a dwt. Just be sure that you pick the correct file type or the template file won't show.

I am not creating a template
I took the drawing that opens with Carlson and created a blank drawing that contains all the settings that I want and saved that as a drawing named "MyTemplate".
When I open Carlson, I then open the drawing "MyTemplate" and begin my new drawing.
Sometimes is is necessary for me erase any pre existing point files that have connected themselves to "MyTemplate" before I begin my new drawing.
I know there are better ways, this works for me....................

Navigate to the dwt file in Windows File Explorer and right click on it and select Properties. On the General Tab toward the bottom, you should see Attributes. Make sure that Read-only is not checked.
@foggyidea Alternatively, you could just take a drawing that has all the bits that you like/want and hit Save-As and under Save-as-type, way down toward the bottom is "Drawing Template (*.dwt)".?ÿ Save in a handy place and select it as your template when starting a new drawing or go the extra mile and put it 25 folders deep under the Sup directory where Carlson/Intellicad hides its dwt files.?ÿ As someone mentioned above, you can also go to Settings, Carlson Configure, Startup Settings, Template Name and set the default template location and file name rather than having navigate to each time you use it.

Now I understand - you are saving your "template" (or what functions as a template) as a DWG rather than a DWT file.?ÿ That's a good idea.
I'm a drafting idiot, so it's pretty easy if I get it.?ÿ Once you have your base dwg with all your layers, blocks, etc., just do a SAVEAS, click the file type box, and click on DWT.?ÿ It will automatically take you to the folder where Carlson keeps DWTs, and call it, BASE, or whatever you want.?ÿ Then every time you use the NEW command the box will pop up and BASE will usually be highlighted.?ÿ From then on all your new dwgs will have what you want.
A drawing template (.dwt) is simply an ordinary drawing file (.dwg) with a different file extension. Take any drawing you wish, change the extension in Windows Explorer, and PRESTO - you've got a template drawing. Naturally if you started?ÿ a new drawing by opening some old drawing and doing a SAVEAS to a new name your new drawing would have all of the old drawing's setup. Well, that is just what you are doing when you use a template.?ÿ
There are many other ways to get there as well, but that might help you understand just what a template is and what it does.
Nope, I don't have to load anything else.
