I haven't completed any training yet and see some advantages to the program, especially surveying functions. I am finding other, not so thrilling, issues.

I'm getting frustrated with the program freezing up. It seems to do it often when using the undo function. Then I close out the program and try to open it and it goes at a snails pace until it tells me that the license is already being used(which is another issue)...then I have to close it again and reopen it.

I have one network license and am currently the only one using it. I cannot open two instances of Carlson on my computer. If I want to open two drawings, I have to switch between them using the window select. It's doable but it was really nice in LDD having one open on each monitor to send objects back and forth( I know I can stretch it over both monitors, but that's annoying). If I accidentally try to open another instance or double click on a .dwg in my explorer, it's about a 90 second process to shut that down.

My right-click issue was a bug that was fixed in the latest build, which was not mentioned to me when I got my brand new CD from sales. I wasn't too happy knowing that I was dinking around with that for hours thinking that I was doing something wrong.

Another issue is my recent files won't show up in my startup wizard. Support walked me through a few settings, which I'd already set, and pretty much accepted the fact that they show up under my 'file' pull-down.

I'm looking forward to getting the training, and do like many things about it I was expecting something a little more stable.

Mine is working pretty good so far.

What OS are you running it on? Windows 7 here.

I can open 2 instances of the program no problem. Don't know why it would limit you to one. With one drawing open I do have to open the program icon again from my desktop and then go to File Open and pick my other dwg. If I double click the dwg straight on it opens in the same instance I already have open. Maybe that will help.

I don't like that they took away the 'Rotate' and 'Translate' from the root drop down menu and buried it in the 'Points' 'Coord File Util' menu. Only 1 extra step but it is still a change.

I have a bug on my 'Reverse Polyline' function. It wacks out and locks up when ran. If I hit escape fast enough it will disengage and still reverse the polyline as intended but if I don't hit escape fast enough it will crash the program.

I learned today you can import a PDF and then snap to line work. I haven't tried it yet but can see how that would be a great feature.

So far no major complaints. I was "forced" to upgrade from 2008 because Windows 7 was crashing the hell out of it. 2011 seems to be stable.

Multiple drawings- Do some searching, it's an Autocad variable setting. Easy to fix once you know the command....

I can open multiple drawings. It's a license issue.

I'm running it on Win7, 64-bit.

Are you running it on a network license? I tried explaining it to the support crew but they just kept telling me to switch drawings under the window pulldown.

Yay! Found another issue. I was trying to insert a symbol and thought I would press the [SELECT CODE] button. It told me I didn't have any codes defined, allowed me to close that popup, then would not let me close the code window. no matter what i pushed. Fortunately I only lost about an hours worth of point sorting and processing.

Do they ever test this S#@T! What a P.O.S.!

I'm not a Carlson user, but I've considered them for a future upgrade. Are you using the intellicad or the acad version?

Sounds like he is using the Icad version. I had similar problems until I rolled back to the OEM ACAD version.

I'm using Carlson 2011 with embedded Autocad.

Then you have a bad copy of the software. Go to the web site and download the latest build off the website. You will NOT have to reregister and it will NOT overwrite any custom stuff you have set up.
I'm running the 2010 version and have none of these issues. Everyone I have talked to running 2011 Embedded seems more than pleased with the new package.
If your problems continue, grab the clod that sold you the package and make him come fix it. That's what VAR's get paid for,

Hi NonTangent,

I was unable to replicate the problem you described using the 101207 build of the product (Help -- About Carlson). Which version are you using? If you have a version earlier than this, I'd suggest visiting http://update.carlsonsw.com/updates.php?product=CarlsonSurveyEmbedded&version=2011 to download and install the update.

For my test, I created an empty FLD file and made sure it didn't have any codes in it. I then initiated the Draw -- Symbols -- Insert Symbols command and clicked the Select Code button. Per your description of the problem, I received the following alert:

After closing this, I was able both close the command via the Cancel button or initiate the command further via the OK button which resulted in:

>Options/Select entities/Enter coords/:

If you can provide me with a more precise sequence that replicates the issue, I'll be sure to get it examined by our programming staff. Feel free to direct any questions to me at lnelsonATcarlsonswDOTcom.

Carlson is light years ahead of the other guys. Ladd does an excellent job helping me out if I have a question about a routine and I do come up with some oddball requests at times.

We had C3D for 6 months before we dumped it and purchased Carlson as the new survey and engineering software.

Their support is second to none.

Bob

Hi NonTangent,

I pulled down the most recent version of the OEM product and performed a new install to a Win 7, 64-bit computer and replicated the Insert Symbol problem you cited above (I performed my earlier testing on Win XP, 32-bit). The scenario has been sent in to programming and I will attempt to report back when a fix is available.

According to Executive Vice President of Development Dave Carlson:

>This is fixed in the new C2011 build. We will release the new OEM build soon.

Persons wanting to be notified of the availability of the new build can do so by visiting and completing the contact information at the Carlson Notification Subscription page.

In the mean-time, the following process should help prevent the previously described problem:

  • From the Points menu, click Point Defaults.
  • Click the Set Table button toward the lower right corner of the dialog box.
  • Select the Carlson.fld file (or any other FLD file supplied with the software) and click Open.
  • Click OK to dismiss the Point Defaults dialog box.
  • Run the Insert Symbols command as desired.
