I need a little help. I have collected data points with more than a description. so my csv has attributes but i formatted it to be like below:

1,10000.000,5000.000,100.00,5/8",0.5' BGND,BENT    So point number northing easting elevation size above or below ground condition.

So I have a lot of flexibility in how I customize this to be in a csv file when i bring it out of our processing software. We are collecting points with extra attributes this is just an example.  For some reason anytime I have the " inch symbol it adds more " symbols and all I want is the text as we place this on the plat , I can bring it all in f2f and it either places everything in the code field or desc for carlson. Or it leaves off some things and does not gather all of this info. we really just need all the text separate so we can show and relayer for platting information. I also attribute the photo name so we can go to that photo but right now i am keeping it simple and just trying to figure out how to make carlson read all of this. So basically how do I either bring in points with multiple attributes or just make them in a csv file as multiple notes. I see that set up wizard to make a custom import but i see know wizard pop up when i check that box.

@ozzy84 Yeah I think that is what I will have to do. Then we can just do a global in text find in and replace with "  try7ing to cut the drafting interface down as much as possible within reason. editing text is easy but if we do that same thing 10000 times a year time adds up.

I try to tell field guys not to use the " when input desc.

Use -in instead. If you can get field guys to change, then no find and replace.

And we all no how filed guys like change!

Unless I'm missing something, the " (and ') character(s) shouldn't really impact you at all. I have, however, seen instances where Excel will wrap a " character with additional quotes """ in order to preserve the formatting when the string is re-opened in Excel.

Depending on your ultimate goal, you could set an import filter along the lines of:

P,Y,X,Z,D,N,N,N

As a quick test, I cloned the example line and modified to prevent duplicate coordinates:

1,10004.000,5001.000,100.00,5/8",0.5' BGND,BENT
2,10003.000,5002.000,100.00,5/8",0.5' BGND,BENT
3,10002.000,5003.000,100.00,5/8",0.5' BGND,BENT
4,10001.000,5004.000,100.00,5/8",0.5' BGND,BENT

Using the following import filter, the file came in without issues and the additional fields show up as Notes:

I hope this information helps.

@ozzy84 Yeah getting field guys to change is a tough one for sure. Getting them to understand the why is the most difficult. I am a o nice these days. I use to be like you do this period no questions asked. But I am more now like trying to explain and teach the why and so it like teaching a toddler sometimes. Of course there is always that one who knows more than anyone else and I would benefit better off banging my head against the door than trying to break through. But for the most part we have some great guys that want to learn so it just takes time is all. I hope to get all this figured out as having attributes makes a very easy way to query for specific information and manage large data sets. Just getting them disciplined to do these things makes it nice for me and the several other PM’s and cad techs to have a good focus point

Yeah getting field guys to change is a tough one for sure.

The main objection from field guys to change is that if they do things your way, some other office dweeb is going to freak. If you can get all the office guys on the same page then you may have some luck changing things.

@norman-oklahoma Yeah We have the office backing so no problem there. We talk and come up with ideas I go through test them figure out the process and then downtime and motion studies on the work flows and have the other LS’s see if I might have missed anything and take field data and redo it to see how it is on both sides office and field. Once I get it worked out and finalized we implement with field coordinator and me and him work through any last minute changes etc. then I take it up the chain show it and then it’s usually a go. We been working on small baby steps until the crews muscle memory is seen then add the next step. As I know many here know from years of experience. An idea is only as good as its implementation. So even good ideas don’t always work the timing has to be right also. I am working this attribute thing a bit. Trying to find the sweet spot and not cause more work but try and streamline some things that is done daily. So those little things that repeat often is where I try and cut time and blunders. The little things add up so a 15 minute task that can be reduced by 50% X’s 1000 times a year adds up. We all know that small job takes x time until Murphy shows up and a 3 day job turns into a two week one. Those things I don’t worry about to much those variables are hard to nail down. But all the little 5 minute 10 minute 30 minute task on any project that I see a way to let technology work for me instead of me working for it and I can set up a process to qa/qc and streamline I am all over that. I work for some real good folks and we have some good folks in the field. Just change is not easy. But we are getting there.
