When you operate your own business that's a daily occurance.?ÿ ??ÿ

Architecs are like cats.

They complain like its my fault when hungry.

They are loud when they multiply. (or do math correctly).

They knock things down off shelves, tables, or wherever they roam.

They run, from the sounds, after knocking things down.

They sit and study you, looking for patterns to take advantage of.

They want to come in when the weather is hostile.

They want to go out when the weather is nice.

This could go on.....

Somewhere I'd like to believe there is a message board where architects post stuff like:

"Surveyors....always whining about drawing software and plans that don't "mathematically close" by the width of a saw blade when they can't even begin to differentiate interior space by creating tension between form and context."?ÿ ??ÿ

The surveyor, he had one job, one freakin' job!... ?ÿ ??ÿ

I worked with an architect who prepared plans for a residential structure.?ÿ The foundation plans were annotated to 1/128".?ÿ There were many jogs and angles and she would not provide CAD.?ÿ I asked if she expected the forms crews to use sandpaper on their forms to meet this tolerance and she replied "Wood is forgiving."

I worked with an architect who prepared plans for a residential structure.?ÿ His design was 50 S.F. over the building coverage and the building was 50' deep.?ÿ He said, let's take a foot out of the middle to make it work.?ÿ Then he said, well, let's take out 18" just to have a little wiggle room.?ÿ I replied, why not take out 16" and remove a joist.?ÿ He replied, "Oh, I don't figure that out.?ÿ I leave that to the structural engineer."

I worked with an architect who prepared plans for a residential structure.?ÿ There was an angle in the building annotated 45 degrees.?ÿ The plans would not mathematically close so he sent the CAD.?ÿ The angle was 46 and change degrees.?ÿ He didn't seem understand why there was a problem with his paper plans.

I had a large residential structure to layout.?ÿ We got there at dawn as the form crew was due early.?ÿ They arrived as we were checking our stakes.?ÿ The foreman was a big guy who came up to me and said "We're having problems with your stakes, these dimensions are all wrong."?ÿ So I asked to see his plans.?ÿ The architect had revised them three days before the layout and nobody got the updated plans to the form crew...?ÿ We had copies delivered to the site.?ÿ The foreman asked if I wanted to stick around to make sure the stakes were right this time.?ÿ I gave him my cell and said call if you have any problems.?ÿ There was no call needed.

We have cornerboard construction here.?ÿ When we as-built, we measure cornerboard to cornerboard and it is rare that we can measure along the foundation.?ÿ We were laying out a garage addition and the architect had used our cornerboard to cornerboard dimensions on her plans.?ÿ The addition was a garage that faced the sideline and was about 25' from the lot line.?ÿ (This will not work unless you back your car into the garage.?ÿ You really need 38' from the face of the garage or an extra wide door so you can start the turn in the garage.)?ÿ The property owners were there and I described the change needed to match the foundation.?ÿ He explained that the architect followed our plans and I explained that we usually don't measure the foundation unless requested.?ÿ Eventually I said something to the effect of Architect sometimes do silly things, like aim garages at a sideyard when there is not enough room to turn around...?ÿ He then introduced me to his wife, the architect for the project.?ÿ Doh.

Goodness, I am really procrastinating today and the stories are all flooding back into my mind.?ÿ I have to go and remedy some awful GIS data that we are supposed to be able to use for some fish trap permitting...?ÿ Most of them are off by thousands of feet.?ÿ The fishermen have a chart with hand drawn locations of their traps that is better...

We complain about architects who dimension to the 1/64th of an inch. I've got one here (one architect that is, plans typical of several sites)?ÿ - 6 story commercial building - with dimensions to the nearest inch only.?ÿ

I have one that takes the cake.?ÿ Redevelopment of a site and the architect designed a nice 3plex to replace the dilapidated 3plex.

The client was told by the realtors that garages would be a great amenity .?ÿ The site is small and I am having trouble fitting the parking into the setbacks.

I want a face to face.?ÿ The client wants to resolve over a phone call.?ÿ The architect emailed this morning with 'we have figured it out, we will send the solution at 1000.'

At 1030 I received the email.

'Given your knowledge with what the boards will approve, we would like for you to site 3 tiny garages on the site plan.'

What a great solution....?ÿ?ÿ

I was told to stake a building that made the leat amount of sense, so much that I had to ask registered what the hay went wrong here.

Not sure how we came up with a cad file of the proposed stake building corners, but it didn't add up. The plans were for a 200' building wrongly dimensioned with the exterior slab dimension of 400'.

Chased down every dimension to find 'the' error, but none of the sub-dimensions ever seemed to equal the related overall dimension. Errors ranged from an inch or two, to 12'-14'.

Bad as the plans were, was listening to the architect trying to lay the blame on his 'bad drafter' .. seriously?
