I purchased the Mavic 3E with the RTK module and was trying to use the terrain following feature but cant seem to get it to work. The terrain I am working in is very steep and narrow with the height difference between the ridges and valleys exceeding 400ft. The mapping mission starts off fine, I had it set to fly 300ft above the terrain, but as it progresses up the valley it claims it has hit the 400ft ceiling and does not progress with the mission. Has anybody tried using the terrain following feature in rugged terrain? It seems like it is using the take-off elevation as it's basis and not the terrain from the DSM.
Sounds like it is working. You just need to increase your max height above take-off to accommodate for the terrain-follow.
From what I have experienced, you are correct. When it comes to the flight ceiling the drone references the takeoff location. If you were to take off from a ridge, the drone would fly well above the 400' ceiling when it was over the valley area. I believe you can have the situation where you set the terrain following to 100', take off from a low area, and be limited to only 50 feet above the high ridge because you are 400' above your takeoff location.
Curious what DSM you are using and would you recommend it? Is it a relatively good model?
@lurker There is an option to automatically download the DSM from the internet through the controller.
We have a similar site condition witha current project, we split the filght into two parts, one to cover the top half od the slope and one to cover the bottom slope. The flight images will have difficulty stitching together when there is great elevation differences in the flight.
