So I'm having an issue with exercise. Besides not wanting to do it my left foot is giving me problems.?ÿ
Seems certain shoes make it sore and running (if what I do can be called running) really can annoy it.?ÿ
I went and had the pair of shoes I like to wear widened, still it's not great, I was thinking it was a bone spur.?ÿ
Finally called the local foot guy and went in.?ÿ
He looks at it, starts pushing and asks where it hurts, well a couple of places really hurt.?ÿ
He says he knows what's wrong; "It's broken" he tells me.?ÿ
Broken??ÿ
He pushes on a point and WOW that hurts.
"Right there, it's broken.
"Do I need x-rays?"
"I wouldn't bother, I've seen so many and there's nothing you can do about it. Just take it easy and it will eventually heal, at least somewhat."
In other words rub some dirt on it.?ÿ
I didn't hurt it, didn't drop anything on it, didn't bang it into anything, it simply broke from regular usage.
At least I have Medicare.?ÿ
Time for a name change?
Do not use MightyToe.
"Lemme spit some chewin' baccy own it", said my grandfather every time we would complain about a bump or bruise.?ÿ It never actually cured anything, but it kept us kids from complaining about our aches and pains.
On a serious note, I've had the same thing happen.?ÿ The doctor suggested a shoe with heavier support and "light duty".?ÿ I was in light shoes during the visit but told the doctor I walked mostly in boots.?ÿ He couldn't understand why I didn't wear a good pair of running shoes.?ÿ Then I explained to him where I did all my "hoofing" and a running shoe would just get tore up it the woods.
His suggestion was to do more surveying on flat surfaces....Then I realized that was just another version of "doc, it hurts when I do this.." .?ÿ An x-ray six months later revealed it had healed.?ÿ
I had to shake my head when I realized I've stomped on my feet until they broke.?ÿ That in itself may be a sign... 😉
Oldest daughter had a similar problem to Mighty Moe.?ÿ Ignored it for about two years but it never healed.?ÿ Best guess by the doctor was a hairline fracture.?ÿ Put her in one of those walking boot thingies.?ÿ Walked out of his office with no pain at all.?ÿ That was only about two weeks ago so haven't heard any updates yet.
My grandmother, rest her soul, lived to 95 and was still riding her bicycle at 90, would say "getting old is rough, but sure beats the alternative!"?ÿ
Had a nasty case of plantar fascitiis in both feet a few years back. Made for one very miserable summer field season. Switched to wearing heavily cushioned running shoes instead of hard soled boots whenever I could get away with it. That and using a product called Traumeel that contains an extract of the arnica flower helped a lot. Took a forever to completely heal but I did learn to be a little kinder to my feet, because it beat the alternative.?ÿ
I have a pair of Danner RainForest boots that are heaven for my feet and ankles. Never had footwear so comfortable. But if I wear them 3 days in row my knees begin to ache. Another day and my hips are starting to bark. So I only wear those on days that I expect the ground to be particularly rough. I've got a pair of Danner "Steel Yard" boots for average days. And some lesser things I got at Costco for the office.?ÿ
There is a reason some running shoes are $200, and more. Other than the logo, I mean. Those reasons are mostly wasted on the young. If you are going to run you need some better shoes.?ÿ
My dad always used to say "If your feet hurt you hurt all over."
"one of those walking boot thingies"
That'll be a "space boot".
When I broke my expatriate ankle, in-country, the doc said I needed a space boot but I wouldn't get one as there were none in-country. Instead I was give a pair of WW II timber crutches, which I prowled around on for six weeks, during which time every single similarly afflicted local that I saw, was wearing a space boot.
Then he probably knew the benefits of foot massage too! ?????ÿ
You must run quite a bit, what running shoes do you prefer?
I just tossed my Danners in the trash. They were fine for about two years then the innards came apart. Very disappointed as I take very good care of my shoes and boots. It took two months for my feet to stop hurting.
I've tried Danner Boots twice. Both pair ended in the dumpster. Last pair caused big toe nail to bruise and separate from the nail bed when I wore them on "high mileage" days.?ÿ
I have had 4 pairs of these boots:

Oddly enough, they are 100% the best boots I have ever had for work. They handle all aspects of surveying from climbing to walking miles of cross-sections on the highway.?ÿ
?ÿ
Size too short, not the fault of the boot.
What other problems?
@williwaw?ÿ I had plantar fasciitis a few years back and the exact opposite was a cure for me.?ÿ I went from wearing running shoes to cowboy boots with a tall heel.?ÿ I had been wearing a pair of Danner boots that to this day are the most comfortable boots I have ever owned.
I do not run. I walk a lot. In any case, its a personal thing. What works for me might not for you.
You must be wearing sandpaper socks. The Rainforests I use I've had for 3 years. The pair before lasted 15+. In the end, I let the soles get too worn to be replaced. The insides were still going strong. Admittedly, as I said, I don't wear them everyday. But they are very high quality boots, and long lasting.?ÿ?ÿ
These Scarpa Kinesis Pro GTX have been probably the most solid comfortable boots I've owned. They really fit my feet. My Danners started coming apart into the second season. Good boot, just didn't measure up to the Scarpa. On concrete and pavement though, sticking with the running shoes. Feet are as unique as individuals so whatever keeps them happy.
Over the last five years, I've been transitioning to minimalist footwear.?ÿ Lightweight, big toe box and zero or nearly zero difference between the height between heel and ball.?ÿ This is not a realistic option for most people due to the atrophy caused by decades of walking in raised heel boots and arch support.?ÿ
Having spent some time with a stone mason and seeing what happens when you push up on the center of an arch from below, it's amazing to me that people with young healthy feet are still "supporting" the arch of their foot.?ÿ Band-Aids are not cures.?ÿ Ankle protection is good, ankle support is bad in the long run.?ÿ High heels were created for style not function except for a few specific activities such as horse riding.
?ÿ
Wool or smartwool blend is all I wear with boots. My feet stay very comfortable.
The Danners have a composite heel cup and toe guard between the leather and lining. Both heel cups detached and ripped through the lining. If I hadn't been in rough terrain three miles from camp I would have gone barefoot. The outside of the boots looked practically new but they were worse than useless.
@holy-cow hairline fracture or stress fracture - hurt foot and stopped running.?ÿ Six weeks later i snuck out of house before dawn and ran MMC marathon - pain for last half and lecture when I got home.?ÿ A year at half throttle to heal but I'd do it again.?ÿ Just takes time and more office vs field.?ÿ Good luck
