I bought a makarov 9mm about 20 years ago, supposedly the same model that was standard issue for the KGB. Always worked fine the times I took it out on a range. Only paid $135 (new), if I recall correctly.
The only time I ever carried it on a job was in the swamps in Florida. I don't know if it would have stopped a gator, but it made me feel better!
I don't usually carry but when I do it's a double-action H-K .40
Google Kroeger+Memphis, Huddle House+West Point, MS, there was a recent flash mob attack at a gas station in Memphis also. I think these attacks are more common than we would like to believe.
Memphis, Tennessee. The FBI ranks it as the third most dangerous city.
Your area also probably has a negative crime rate.
When I carry, it's usually a Ruger LCP in .380 for walks in the neighborhood - (wife is afraid of dogs). When I travel, it's a XDS .45ACP modified with a trigger job & Tritium sights or a Boberg .45ACP with Tritium sights. At home, it's a S&W 625 snub-nose revolver .45ACP. The most dangerous place I go is daily work on campus ... but it's against the law to carry on campus! Sure wish they'd change the law as there are a LOT of crazies around here, especially around final exam time. Once there was a gun fight on campus over a parking space. Nut cases abound around here.
Except the bullet choice is limited. I have mainly seen FMJ available, which would make a poor self defense cartridge.
Glock 27 in .40 or Kel-Tec 380 ACP
Interesting there were only 2 that responded they carried a 1911 style.
I wonder if there is any primary reason behind this?
This post is somewhat timely since I am taking a CCW class next month.
I'm taking it with a larger frame revolver, but intend to purchase something more suitable after I get my permit.
At home I have a S&W snub nosed .357 and my wife has a S&W Airweight .38, but I also keep a Mossburg 12 gauge by the bed. We figure that if someone comes through the gate, 500' to the house, and gets past the dogs, they're probably not there to sell us girl scout cookies.
Man its great to be a surveyor! What other private sector job would have EDC as a popular topic?!

Shooting one vs. carrying one are VERY different. They are VERY hard to conceal and truly, for safety, NEED to be carried outside the waistband locked and cocked rather than tucked in the waistband. I have a Kimber CDPII and it is small enough, but truly is a mule in your hands. No thank you. My glock 27 was designed to be conceal carry rather than forcing a duty weapon to do the work or a conceal carry.
That and I really enjoy the internal safety's of the glock and other polymer guns vs. the revolver or 1911. I'm clumsy. 🙂
I keep a Ruger LC9 in the truck and carry it on me when I think it may be necessary. I chose it because it's a single stack. Got the extended magazine for a better grip. My wife has the S&W MP9 with the safety which is a double stack (wider grip) but she still insist on keeping her .38 snub nose in her purse.

I would neither ask nor respond to a post like this on a public forum...
Jim in Az is exactly right!
I don't want to live anywhere I feel the need to carry. I wasted a good part of my youth living in Los Angeles and listening to gangs shoot at each other each night hoping I wouldn't find myself in the cross fire. Guy could get himself shot for just looking at someone the wrong way. One morning I walked down stairs and down the side walk to get a cup of coffee and a paper and had to step over a big pool of blood on the side walk from a gang shooting the night before, not a hundred feet from my apartment. Few days later I was walking down that same side walk and a car passing by back fired and I hit the pavement. When I got up and dusted myself off a realized what had happened, I made up my mind right then and there I wasn't going to live the rest of my life in fear. Good bye LA. Hello AK. Smartest damn thing I ever did, next to getting my surveyor's license of course. 😉
Y'all have a good day and be safe.
It's a pick your poison world to be sure. Gangs, Tornadoes, quakes, bears, etc... It's always something. Back in Missouri I didn't need a gun to feel safe in the woods, but wouldn't go some places downtown unarmed. Idaho is quite the opposite (for the most part). I am with you on not wanting to live where I have to carry to get the morning paper. Even so I enjoy the freedom to choose if and what to carry on a given day. Not sure why so many folks get worked up about it...
I agree about not living in an area where I feel unsafe. Actually, the area where I live is very safe, even fairly rural. But sometimes I do have to work in areas that are quite different. In Memphis, as I'm sure is true in other cities, a couple of miles, or even a couple of blocks make a huge difference in the neighborhood. I like the area where I live, but I wouldn't consider living in some of the areas where I work.
I like my Ruger LC9 with laser. The longer trigger pull of the compacts of any brand takes a little getting used to.
Why do I carry a gun? Cause I'm too old to tote an a$$ whoopin and too young to die.
A day ago in Guelph:
