What the heck is salal?
My experience is from several years surveying on the central Oregon Coast. It is is a large-area ground cover, miserable to survey through, often higher than your head,?ÿ and you frequently have to cut every inch of your line through it.

What the heck is salal?
It's a viny, bushy, waxy leaved plant that grows west of the Cascades. When not too thick it is pretty benign, but near the coast, especially on the margins of roads, it tends to grow in thick tangles, way above head high that?ÿ can't be pushed through, can't be cut through, can't be seen through. At least it doesn't have?ÿ thorns or barbs or urushiol or anything like that.?ÿ?ÿ

I'm on the Central Oregon Coast, near Newport and Yaquina Head.?ÿ (as seen in some of these photos, https://surveyorconnect.com/community/todays-office/living-the-beach-life/)
As mentioned, salal can be very dense and tall.?ÿ The only surveying benefit I've found is that you can't fall over when you slip; you just remain where you were suspended by the salal.?ÿ

Salal...?ÿ We've got a similar nasty in eastern Australia called Lantana which was imported from South America in the 1840's as an ornamental.?ÿ?ÿ ??ÿ
