I did that before. I had stopped by to check out the EDMs and had it in the truck. I was running an R8 with a TSC2 and cellphone connection to the Trimble VRS network. Got the results you would expect. A couple hundredths here and there from 0m station to the 150M, 400M, and 1000M.

What would you expect this to tell you other than you have all your settings correct? GPS itself just works or it doesn't. Maybe things like scale factor settings, the bubbles on your receiver poles, etc.

Yes, and it demonstrated the unit was every bit as accurate as expected both horizontally and vertically.

I believe that it is necessary to calibrate the user before sending them out to do it on a real job.

When a hand wants to be an IMAN he has to traverse thru 3 points in my yard and tie in another point lying inside that triangle from all three hubs.

Before I turn anyone loose with the GPS the operator has to perform a static on each of those points and whatever else they have learned.

Bottom line, I can show you what to do in my yard much easier than over the phone and lost while in the middle of a job.

FWIW,

In the late 1990s the Canadians developed a number of GPS Validation Networks. One example is described on this page: http://www.geobc.gov.bc.ca/base-mapping/atlas/gsr/specs/gpsbasenet_okanagan.pdf

While some informal work was done on the idea by the U.S. NGS nothing came of it. I believe the Australians also explored the idea.

As others note, EDM measurements and GPS positioning are hardly comparable.

Cheers,

DMM
