I'm re-taking my FS Exam and I've been studying a great deal and I've scoured the internet for what ever I could find to help. Does anyone have any links or files that will help? Mostly I'm looking for practice problems.?ÿ
?ÿ
Thanks.?ÿ
I assume you have the NCEES practice booklet? I have a copy of an exam prep but you would have to hit me up personally to get the PDF. Let me know and good luck!
Anthony,
Did you get your exam diagnostic report? That should direct you to the areas needing work...

Like Cordgrass said. Spend the $$ on a good review book, or else you are setting yourself up for failure, again.?ÿ
Check out this site, it has a bunch of good information and practice tests as well http://www.hp33ssurveyor.com/
I also believe Caltrans has good information http://www.dot.ca.gov/landsurveys/workbook.html
I also thought what helped me a lot was Ted Madson's The Mathematics of Land Surveying, but I did a lot of practice exams from the first website provided. You have to pay for them but I found them to be very helpful.

"studying a great deal" is short on explanation. Are you only studying on your own, with other applicants, with one or more mentors? If you are alone and only using the internet you are on the wrong track. For a random professional to offer you reasonable advice, he requires a background in your particular case, just as he needs particular background on every parcel he surveys. There is no one and/or correct answer. My first response to you is what formal education do you have?

I found the "Surveyors reference manual" https://www.amazon.com/Surveyor-Reference-Manual-6th-Ed/dp/1591264855 really helpful for the FS exam it has practice problems, just focus on the areas needed. Also go through the exam formulas that NCEES provides and get somewhat familiar using them. You won't use them all they throw in way too many formulas so that you have to dig through them. Most of math and long problems were on the first half of test and the second half went really fast FYI.
Anthony, check your PMs. Hope it helps.

I have a 2 year degree in Surveying/Geomatics combined with 9 years of experience in all aspects from field to finish.?ÿ

I've come across Caltrans in my research. It's good information but the videos are very dry.?ÿ
If your education was recent then you should have been more than ready to pass the exam. Essentially you want to concentrate on your weaknesses as in prior?ÿeducation that you are not using day to day to fill out your learning. You do want to be studying with recent classmates, or coworkers with your same goal. You may want to consider a class in improving your test taking skills.
I had great difficulty in college at times with being able to concentrate on and pass an exam. What helped most was getting professional guidance on relaxation. In other words a Mental Mentor.

The first time you took the test you should have gotten a diagnostic report from NCEES. The report won't tell you what questions you missed, but it will break down how well you did in every subject tested.
You will get some useful general advice here. If you ask about the subjects needing work you are more likely to get the answers you need.
Good luck..
This is for the FS test. There will be several additional recommendations when you get to the PS.
Surveying Solved Problems for the FS and PS Exams. Cheap right now at $60.?ÿ This is the book that used to be 1001 Surveying Solved Problems. It has way more problems, with solutions, than the NCEES sample exams.?ÿ?ÿ
The CALTRANS stuff is dry, very dry. But still valid. A gift to the profession. You need to push through those. There is a printed study guide that goes along with that which should not be ignored. LSAW also has some recorded material.?ÿ?ÿ
Boundary Control & Legal Principles, but an early edition (I recommend the 2nd, the first is good but too rare & expensive). The most recent editions have too much minutae that will not be on the test. This can be had for under $10 including shipping.
Evidence and Procedures for Boundary Location. Again,?ÿan early edition -for the same reason.
Elementary Surveying, a recent edition but not necessarily the very latest. Or some other comprehensive general text of recent origin as long as it includes chapters on GNSS, coordinate systems, and grid projections.?ÿ
2009 Manual of Survey Instructions. With a title like that how could you not need it??ÿ Downloadable. Then there is the little Restorations pamphlet from the '70s.?ÿ
ACSM Definitions of Surveying & Associated Terms and?ÿ Black's Law Dictionary would both be good additions to the library.

I've found the Restorations guide/index to my manual to be very helpful.?ÿ Updated for 2009 (in addition to 1973).?ÿ https://www.amazon.com/Restoration-Obliterated-Corners-Subdivision-Sections/dp/1456539361/
On a separate topic, and maybe this should be a different thread, collecting all the useful resources (references to study materials, calculator programs, books, advice, etc) into one or two pages on this site might be really useful.?ÿ This way someone getting started could find the CalTrans, manuals, books, and other things in one spot.?ÿ It took me a good amount of time to piece together a good deal of the information and some of it is rather obscure and difficult to find.?ÿ

^^
I just passed my FS this spring in my final year of a Bachelors in Surveying Engineering Technology. Most of my studying time for calculations was based on taking several practice tests and then finding similar questions to problems I struggled with in the Solved Problems book that Mark references above. I spent a lot of time reviewing construction surveying problems as nearly all my practical experience has been in residential boundary surveying.?ÿ
I also went through the NCEES practice test and booklet that shows the percentage breakdown of each topic they cover in the test and would try to make sure I wasn't going to get any questions that would surprise me to much.
If your mainly looking for practice problems I think the Solved Problems book, a NCEES Practice Exam booklet, Elementary Surveying textbook, and maybe a supplemental resource for the PLSS system should be all the material you would need to study for the FS.
