One of my coworkers asked me today about throwing a chain. We took the new LS out to the sidewalk and demonstrated throwing a chain. I haven't done it but 3 or 4 times in the last 30 years but I still remember how to do it.

Any left-handers out there? 😉

You that are know what I'm talking about. When I wanted to mess with somebody I use to wrap the chain left handed. When a right handed person attempts to drop the chain there is a twist or kink every five feet. Hilarious.

My Father taught me how to do it when I was 10. I had trouble understanding at that age why I needed to spend a Saturday learning it. A few weeks latter he had me out on a survey just tagging along. At the end of the day, he had me put up the chain and throw it. I did not understand what he thought was so funny. Latter, I learned that nobody on his crew did it very well. They became much more proficient after that. I doubt that they thought I was a cute little kid.

I'm left handed but was taught to throw the chain right handed. I have to think about it every time I get the chain out so that I don't screw myself up.

Once I made Chief there was no problem. My crew got to learn how to throw it left handed..

Do 200 and 300 foot tapes count?

I could throw it off a cliff. That's about it. Never had to do it.

OK guys, how many of you can 'throw' it one handed?

I mean after it has been wrapped to the ol' "circle eight" config.

I can, but I only try if I'm the one that has 'done it up' TIGHTLY. If you try to do it with a loosely wrapped chain, you can make a big mess....

EDIT: C'mon guys...even a gurl can do it!!

All of you "sinister" people seem to gang up on those of us in the majority.

How did "sinister", the Latin word for "left-handed", get its current meaning?

I went down and grabbed my thrown 200 footer, unflaked it and re threw it, first try. it has probably been 10 years, maybe more.
like riding a bike, once you get it you don't forget

Learn how to throw a band saw blade and throwing a chain becomes much easier and less bloody.

Steve,
Back in my Weyerhaeuser days...1975...the old guys taught me how to throw. I got pretty good at a 'two hand', but since they did it one handed BEHIND their back, I never learned how. I do remember Dr Knowles throwing one hand behind the back. Maybe we can get him to teach us how Oct. 17th.

did you watch the video?
it's not easy.

dad was a butcher, he had to throw the band saw blades, and flake them too. I never learned, but dad made it look easy...

Not unlike making up and throwing a "heaving line" on board a ship/yacht when docking.

Didn't have a chain in the truck I drove home (thought there was..). I wanted to get it out and play with it.

I actually haven't thrown a chain one-handed in a year or two, but I'm sure I still can. Maybe I'll get video posted soon.

That is not funny! Used to be able to do it behind my back - wouldnt be left handed though. Has been over 30years since I tried.
