Whats going on at the "other Board"? I haven't been there for about a year.

This place is all I need!

I checked over there last week.

But I'm OK now.

After watching the demise of the old board I voiced my objection when another online community I participate in announced their update plans.

Alas they did not head my warnings and tried to institute a overly involved board with social networking inspired stuff like a "wall" and "friends" and now the board is DEAD.

It is obvious that Wendell had the right idea. Simple and all we really wanted.

There is another board too with a slogan than makes it sound like a 12 step program. I tried looking at it the other day and the dang thing is so confusingly laid out that I felt like I was going in circles. KISS principle works great here.

there's another board??
seriously, I tried to tell them that they were heading in the wrong direction, but they wouldnt listen. Their "board" appears to have had 1 or 2 active threads the last few days...I found that place annoyingly slow to navigate and full of stupid features nobody would ever use (and now nobody does). This board is a little slow at times and I dont like the format as much as the "old" board but it is simple and easy to navigate.

Like others have said they wouldn't listen to me either.
With 30+ years as a software engineer you would think they might listen to what I might have say - for free.
Instead, I got blasted for voicing my opinion in that they were going down the wrong road.

I'm generally not one to say I told you so.... but..... well......

A lot of us tried to tell them. Some of us gave them a little time to work the bugs out, but the forum admin wouldn't listen to us when we told them what the bugs were. Bugs for many of us were cool new cutting edge features for them.

They had 2 or 3 cheerleaders for the new format who would jump on and severely criticize anyone who wasn't pleased with the new format and features. The last time I looked in there, which was quite a few months ago, it seemed like it was those 2 or 3 cheerleaders and a handful of people who stumbled across the board, with 2 of the cheerleaders using near every thread to carry on a never ending feud based on disagreeing on every topic imaginable and bending each topic to a basic political disagreement.

Even the archives had been trashed. The threads are there, but any post longer than a couple hundred characters was truncated to about a couple hundred characters. and threads with more than a dozen or so replies got truncated to about a dozen replies. A lot of good material in the survey categories is lost. The value of what they had as an educational tool was incredibly immense, and they just shootcanned the whole thing.

Not much useful over there anymore. Their magazine increasingly fits that description as well.

I think the majority of active posters tried to tell them . . .

But their mind was made up long before they indicated anything to us, or before they ever asked us for an opinion.

Haven't been there in probably over a year, no need. I get to devote about an hour a day to a total of 5 websites, one about shooting, one about land surveying, one about Carlson software, one dedicated politics and religion, and one about trumpets.

OK, I lie, more like a max of an hour most days but am fully capable of burning 16 hours straight between the five if I get the chance. Even then, in matters relating to land surveying this is ground zero.

Absolutely perfect business strategy on Wendell and Angel’s behalf.

What some of my associates would say, "Them’s two got’s what y'all call bidnizz akoomen."

Cubicles

Lots of good memories over there but when they changed the format, it was inaccessible w/ my dial-up. Seems like lots of low-traffic forums make the mistake of dividing the board into too many cubicles. Who wants to hand out in a place with a bunch of (mostly empty) cubicles?

Cubicles

Simple, and fast enough for dial up. That would be a good idea.

I haven't been there but a couple of times since it started, but I will say it would be nice if there was a "cached" copy of the old board in it's original format for researching topics.

Not to mention just to read some of Nearly Normal's trippy entries.

like the memory of an ex-wife...

..glad as heck they're gone.

Couldn't tell you what got into their heads. I suspect, like a lot of things in this world, someone tried to profiteer off of a successful thing. The "new and improved" sucked..Some things in life are far more important than a black number on the bottom line.

The serious AND humorous banter, the brotherhood and technical support we all enjoy here from Wendell's work is truly priceless.
