I'm building a deck at my home. Big deck, approx. 26' x 17', with the 26' length parallel to the back of the house.
Ugh... it's too long of a saga to describe how I screwed up... but the snapshot is, I didn't square up the corner piers that are 16 feet out from the house and dug the first one too deep by about 9 inches.

Do you feel better now??ÿ Haha
I feel your pain. I'm replacing old doors with pre-hung doors in the house and after trimming one, I realized I trimmed the top not the bottom. I've "corrected" it best I can, it looks good, unless you know what to look for......
@mightymoe anyone who frequents this board and visits your house will know what to look for, same for my deck.
?ÿ
You're not the first, or the last
@fairbanksls yes, thanks... surprisingly, posting helps diminish the "are you really that dumb?" feeling.
Help the feeling, but doesn't remove the fact. sheesh...
Last year we re-did the kitchen floor. The plan changed from vinyl over old ceramic, to new ceramic, to new vinyl I interlocking tiles as we realized we would never get the dishwasher out again with the first two plans.
I tore out the old ceramic tile that was an old color and broken in spots. It took too long to level up the floor because they had used an epoxy instead of the more common quickest mortar. It took lots of chiseling and sanding and multiple coats of leveling compound.
After all that, I wanted it to look professional. But every time I walk in, I see the joints that aren't perfectly spaced.

Trick is to make out like you planned it that way.
When we replaced the old deck behind our house several years ago, I worked with a moonlighter to save money.?ÿ The result is great, unless you look at things like the 3 piers that aren't anywhere near in line, after I put up batter boards and string line for the guy.
I can absolutely relate.?ÿ Plenty examples.
I had to put a 3/4? shim on a 6x6 post because I cut it too short??twice. Don??t know how that happened.
On the other hand, it ought to drain well. ?????ÿ
Typical contractor.?ÿ Blame the surveyor.?ÿ
Prob not the surveyors fault, it is the guy who designed the thing and didn't give you adequate plans - again.
?ÿ
And he will blame the contractor.

I am guessing in the case, you all are paying to fix! 🙂
@williwaw indeed. Except I had my wife hold the zero end of the tape when I checked the diagonal.
My sympathies. We just bought a 1917 home that will be needing a fair amount of work. Can't wait till my first major screwup. Will document here...
@williwaw indeed. Except I had my wife hold the zero end of the tape when I checked the diagonal.
Oh No! Things weren't too bad until the wife got involved... ????
Of course this gives you the option of blaming things on her, but we all know where that would lead...

At least y'all are ALLOWED to play with neat tools. SWMBO made me swear them off the last time she had to deliver me to the ER. ?????ÿ
?ÿ
I do not do home repairs.?ÿ Period.?ÿ I will gladly pay someone who knows what they are doing to do it for me.?ÿ Life is too short for the headaches.
It takes a special degree of skill to have all the tools to do the job right and be like... nah.?ÿ ????ÿ
