I tried to google it, with no success. What does the acronym BSTM stand for, when used in reference to an asphalt road? Thank you in advance.

The bituminous surface treatment sounds right, but the M has me stymied. (M)at? (M)ix?

I remember asking the same question 25 years ago when I first saw BSTM road in the field notes. I do remember that these were the first three words. I cannot remember what the M stands for. Also, I am not sure if this is local "Pittsburgheze" or if it is used elsewhere. I was thinking that the M could stand for Macadam.

Is this something on a set of construction plans? If so, have you checked the legend? If it's not there call the engineer responsible.

Look up Bituminous Surface Treatment, Modified.

I know a common running surface on an asphalt road is designated as "Type D, Modified"
B-)
