We have mechanical pump counters on our above ground fuel tanks but there isn't an amount in dollars, just gallons :-).

They like us to fill up at State facilities because it is cheaper but commercial gas stations have the advantage of having something to clean the windows with and paper towels.

Ditch The $0.50 Coin

Two quarters weigh less and take up less space than a 50 cent piece.

That frees up a slot for the dollar coin.

A nearby town is looking to up their parking meters to $1 per hour. That would be a lot of quarters at the court house. Other than that I drive throught the town without stopping.

Ditch the $2 bill, but a $2.50 bill might make sense. If the clerk can't make change with that send them to Guatamala, even if they are US Citizens.

BTW, there goes the dollar menu at Mickey Dees.

Ditch The $0.50 Coin

You mean they still use 50-cent pieces in your area? I haven't seen one in circulation for years.

Bill

Kennedy Half-Dollars are minted every year, but I don't see them very often, EXCEPT in Nevada, where they are like belly buttons (slot machines).

Ditch The $0.50 Coin

Parking meters are going to be replaced with those payment kiosks that supposedly accept your credit card LOL.

Then you put the slip of paper on your dash.

In 20 or 30 years coin operated machines will be a piece of history.

Banknotes

My son has a 100 trillion Zimbabwe dollars.

And yeah, we make lots of dollar coins ... the US mint releases 5 new designs for dollar coins every year, but as long as we keep printing paper dollars, they will never be popular to use. Euro 1 and 2 coins are very popular, because they don't print a paper bill less than 5. The Canada $2 and Euro 1 & 2 coins are bimetallic, to reduce counterfeiting, which is a problem, and there are counterfeit small denomination Euro coins out there, believe it or not. As far as I know, the US has never made a bimetallic coin.

"... but a $2.50 bill might make sense..."

Only to an engineer.
A scale of 1” = 150' also makes sense to some.

Parking payment Kiosk

Downtown Portland, Oregon installed those several years ago. They work well.

Ditch The $0.50 Coin

Its already happening. I know of at least one major city where the mayor has privatized the parking meter system, to provide the efficient parking we demand.

I'm offended at the idea. We should return to a solid gold and silver standard, Require that the quarters be made of real silver, same for 50cent pieces, and pennies should be real copper.

It is the departure from a standard that has destroyed the US economy.

Kind of like using a FLEXIBLE survey foot, that is 1 foot long in say, 1910, a foot and an inch in 1930, and now the foot is about 10' long. It goobers up the economy.

Inflation is robbery of the best of people, the working class poor.

How much is an ounce of gold worth?

Who decides that?

Can it ever be changed?

Hard currencies began to disappear during the age of discovery because there wasn't enough cash available to finance exploration and colonization.

I'd be willing to debate you on this but it would go all P&R quickly, so I'll refrain.

The NPR show Planet Money did an episode on this question. They concluded that the bill was less expensive. But that the loonie coin was the less expensive option for Canadians. The reason - the Canadian bills were estimated to last 1 year. American bills supposedly last over 4 years.

Hmmmmm.

My Vote: Ditch the 1$ bill & the penny.

I actually like one dollar coins, I get them at the post office vending machine.

I guess it's just the Scottish blood in me, but I have NEVER ever confused a dollar for a quarter. I can't understand how any man of modest means could.

:-S

I'm against it. I'd rather eliminate the penny. That way everything would be 2.95 instead of 2.99.
