Has anyone else held their wrists under cool, running water; to help you cool down?
I started doing that as a little kid and still do, sometimes. Not sure if it helps the rest of me; but wrists sure feel better!
The high today, in Puyallup, shouldn't be above 70f, so I'm good. I hope the rest of you stay safe...
It is sooooo hot the corn in the field started popping and the bull thought it was snow and froze to death.
Well yesterday the ambient temp where I was working was around 97. And it wore me out. I am sore and tired and just slow today and don't want to do a damned thing and don't care. I was so soaked in sweat again that there was not a dry piece of clothing on me and my socks were wringing wet and my boots were full of sweat and had to be on the boot dryer all night.
done it for years- was first introduced to the idea in a running group about 20 years ago. other thank dunking the old cabeza in a tub of cold water, this is easily the most effective (and efficient) way to cool off quickly (and i think there's data to suggest it's not just psychosomatic).
on topic- the local wimp "feels like/heat index" temperature has been up around 110 for a couple weeks now. which just means the humidity is up a bit. the last few days on a route survey it's been a case of choosing your poison- either hang out down low in the shaded pig/snake/spider bog with zero discernable air movement, or crawl up and out into the convection oven and shoot pavement and improvements. either way i've been shedding 4-5 pounds a day in water weight even with an extremely generous intake throughout the day.
I saw a quasi-medical report about this. IIRC it cools the blood which helps cool your core more quickly. Holding something cool to the side of your neck is also supposed to help.
I brought my kids from inland southern California to my hometown, Columbus, Ohio, for a couple of weeks. They're at a day camp in the woods this week. I was all set to go walking every day in the park across the street....then I was faced with 80+ temps with 87% humidity at 8 am. Yup, nope. Temps are heading to 100?ø this weekend, but we'll be on our way to northern Michigan, thankfully.
It's 95-95-95 around here..95 degrees, 95% humidity, 95% of the time.
But rejoice as September 1st. is only six weeks away.?ÿ And I don't know why I look forward to September because it's usually hot as hell also.?ÿ But it's at least "the beginning of the end of hot weather".

Frogg Toggs blankets around my neck and over my shoulders, doo rag soaked with water under a large brimmed straw hat.
Highs in the 90s.
Lows in the 60s, sometimes if the on-shore flow is strong enough we get down into the 50s.
No Air Conditioning at home so the cool mornings are very nice.?ÿ The house is concrete so we usually stay at or below 80 unless we get into triple digits then we can get as high as 85.?ÿ Mornings are wonderful, open windows, blow cool air in with an Army of fans.
A fellow near Wichita tried to claim his gallon jar of sun tea was boiling.
As a couple of fellow PNW'ers have already said, it's been a cooler and wetter than normal July hereabouts so far. Highs just into the 80's most days.?ÿ
Its so hot here that your farts are like a blow torch and can cause brush fires!
In Nut world it's 105(41c) with heat index at 112F(44c) and 99% humidity. Feels like you are breathing water.?ÿ ?????ÿ
The UV index is high too. Long sleeve shirts are in order.
