Just noticed yesterday that TBPELS, Texas, is going to require fingerprints and a background check for renewal in December.  Do any other states require this for Land Surveyors?  I am licensed in multiple states.  I hope that I don't have to do this multiple times.  I may see if I can use the same fingerprint session to apply for a concealed carry permit at the same time.

I don't have any sort of criminal record but what kind of big brother BS is this??ÿ I would expect something like this from California but certainly not Texas.?ÿ Talk about ridiculous...

It was a requirement pushed on the TBPELS by the Sunset Committee. Same ones that merged surveyors with the engineers (engineers and architects have been doing fingerprint background check for years). Same legislative committee that is requiring the TBPELS to adopt the PS exam for Texas RPLS candidates.

Georgia does not require a fingerprint but we have had to provide proof that we are citizens or legal residents (passport, certified birth certificate, etc.).?ÿ The first renewal after that went into effect created a bit of a kerfuffle, it seems we were going to have to provide that evidence every renewal period.?ÿ Thank Heavens cooler and more sane heads prevailed and we only had to provide that once.

@bstrand

Texas is more authoritarian than California in many ways.  For example, in Texas if your patent from the state turns out to have more area then the original survey, you have to pay the state for the extra area to have marketable title.

If your Patent turns out to be SMALLER, then does the State PAY YOU for the difference?

I do not recall any specific requirement that a registrant be a citizen or even a legal resident in Oregon or Washington. When I lived and worked in Canada, where licensing is very difficult to obtain, some Canadian guys would do the Washington State test just to spice up their resume a bit.?ÿ?ÿ

We can thank the engineers in Texas for what happens now, only one Surveyor on the entire Board Of Registration.

I am wondering how they hope to pull off getting everyone's fingerprints when we are spread out over Texas and many other states.

Hopefully, they will have something at the CEU meetings to gather them.

@jamesf1

a few years back at renewal time I was asked for passport copy or some such that is "not your effing business"
since they have a reasonable reasonable past to side step and "retire" and easily return to active I took that path.

@peter-ehlert I was looking at applying to CA (still may) and one of the requirements is to submit prints. May be just for new applicants?

?ÿ

On the application there is a checkbox for print cards

@stlsurveyor

If you need prints for application, I suspect renewal is not far away

the nanny state is becoming intense

NJ doesn't require fingerprints, but they run your social for felonies and child support.

?ÿthey run your social for?ÿ

One of my pet peeves, which I call to the attention of every person who uses it in a personal transaction with me.

I assume you mean a Social Security Number.

A social is a get together with a bunch of other people.
