Can anyone tell me what company you are using for insuring your equipment?

?ÿ

I have Hiscox for professional and general liability.?ÿ I called and asked them about equipment insurance.?ÿ They have up to a $25,000 onsite coverage but only $2500 offsite.?ÿ I just bought a used Trimble S6 which i feel is worth about $8000 at least (per ebay prices).?ÿ $2500 would help but wondering if i can do better.

?ÿ

Thanks for any advice.

What do they mean by onsite/offsite? I have an inland marine policy that covers everything everywhere.?ÿ

My equipment insurance is through CNA, same as general liability and Workers Comp. I used to have auto and professional liability with them, but found better deals elsewhere on those. Actually they cancelled my auto policy for two NON-MOVING claims (someone broke the rear window when it was parked on the street and another time it was damaged while parked at the airport), and I found much cheaper elsewhere. Never had a moving accident claim, but they still charged me too much (compared to other commercial auto policy I found).?ÿ

@john-hamilton i guess they have different amounts of coverage for the equipment at the business address (onsite) and the equipment being used in the field (offsite).  weird i know.  i told him that surveyors don't work at an office all the time but also in the field at different job sites.

i'll check CNA.  thanks.

@jim-frame

Come on Jim, you are better than that. California boy and all.

I'm surprised that you didn't get a smack down for that.

BTW, I have an equipment rider to my GL policy with The Hartford that covers my equipment anywhere, anytime. For what I have it is about $600/yr.

JA, PLS SoCal

@twkoh it could also mean that the chief takes the equipment home because the company lets him use the survey vehicle.

Theft or an accident could be covered by auto, but that incident could be classified as off site

@jerry-attrick 😀 poor Jim.  haha.

so would this cover the gun getting knocked over somehow? say you were set up on a sliding gate track and the gate accidently closed because you leaned on the gate remote when getting something from the car (what happened to my old topcon after 15 years of service).  $600/yr seems reasonable.

@john-hamilton

Used Insurance Risk for several years. A new Insurance guy started up. I went to him and he set me up with the same coverage that Assurance Risk had for a quarter of the premium. It was with State Farm.

I started out with Assurance Risk. Had a couple of claims which they paid no problem. Trouble with them was my equipment kept getting worth less, but the premiums kept going up. Went to a young guy who was just starting up a State Farm Agency. He got me the same coverage for a quarter of the cost. I guess it pays to shop around for insurance. Just make sure they're quoting on the same coverage.

@twkoh

I had an incident in which a digital level was smashed in a door, one with a strong "automatic closure device" (those angled pieces of metal connecting the door to the frame). Insurance covered that (minus deductible). I was carrying what my late mother used to call a "lazy man's load" (i.e. too much stuff instead of making two trips)

I have an inland marine policy through CNA (agent is ISCofA out of NC) that covers all of my equipment for replacement cost.?ÿ I'd have to look up the cost but it isn't horrible or I'd remember it. Insuring for replacement cost will be slightly more expensive in the short term but one robot flattened by a car or a truck full of equipment stolen while you're on lunch will make a believer out of you.?ÿ
